The ADEQ-sponsored Free E-Waste Recycling Event in Payson May 7 had a particularly pleasant bottom line. A total of 20,345 pounds of electronic waste were collected, nearly double the 10,601 pounds collected the first time the event was conducted in Payson in October 2009. The number of vehicles participating also increased this time around, from 125 to 134.
The Tonto Apache Tribe brought about a dozen pickup loads from its tribal headquarters and Mazatzal Hotel and Casino, Gila County brought a dump truck full of electronic recyclables, and sizeable contributions also came in from the Town of Payson, the Payson Roundup newspaper and Payson Unified School District.
The isolated community of Young, southeast of Payson, also had a community collection drive that resulted in three vehicle loads coming to the event.
ADEQ would like to thank Payson Water Department and its other co-sponsors the Town of Star Valley, Gila County, Northern Gila County Sanitary District and E-Waste Harvesters of Phoenix for the success of the event.
