The big holiday weekend is finally here.

Tonto Village is gearing up for a big weekend with many of our summer residents opening up their cabins for the season.

The Hellsgate Firefly Auxiliary is putting on one of two annual fund-raisers on Saturday, May 28 in Tonto Village at the Hellsgate fire station on Mathews Lane. The event is a full-scale breakfast featuring biscuits and sausage gravy, scrambled eggs, sausage patty, coffee and juice for only $5 a plate. The food will be ready at 8 a.m. and for late sleepers, the food will be served until 11 a.m. For the first time this year, there will also be a bake sale and there will be many homemade goodies such as jams and jellies, homemade potato rolls, homemade breads, including banana and apple.

If you would like to donate any baked goods, contact Janet at (928) 478-9935 or leave the items at the Tonto Village Fire Station Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. or bring the items with you the morning of the breakfast.

Larry Smith, our favorite music man, will supply the entertainment with many of your favorite songs, and maybe a bit of karaoke thrown in. Come and visit with your neighbors, have a great breakfast and relax and enjoy the music. There will be door prizes awarded throughout the morning, so stick around a while and enjoy the music, and get reacquainted with some of your neighbors. There will be a booth selling Hellsgate T-shirts and caps. There will also be a table set up to take blood pressure checks by one of the EMT firefighters.

Raffle tickets will also be sold for the Husqvarna 20” chain saw, known as the ’Rancher’, a $300 food gift card and a $200 gas card. The cost is $1 for one or 6 for $5. There will be a booth at the breakfast for anyone to buy tickets. The drawing will be at the Fireflies Labor Day BBQ on Sept. 3.

You can feel really good about supporting your local fire department since they would be your lifeline in case of a medical emergency, a forest fire or, heaven forbid, a house fire. The Fireflies try to support them as much as possible and they appreciate everyone who helps the fund-raisers to be a success.

Hellsgate Fire Department

A regular fire board meeting will be on Wednesday, June 8, 2011. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Star Valley fire station on Walters Lane. There will be a second reading of the budget for the 2011-2012 fiscal year.

At the May 11 fire board meeting, certificates were awarded to Captain Nick Fitch, Chief Gary Hatch, and Martha Bartlett for years of service to the fire department.

The Fire OPS class that was held at Gila Community College graduated 22 firefighters in the classes of Fire Operations I and II. They now qualify to be full-fledged firefighters. From Hellgate Fire Department, the graduates were: Mike McWilliams, Nicole Asmundson, Brian Wiggins, Jacob Gardner, Travis Kilbourne, Bobby Mollere, Dale Hayes, Ivan Gamboa and Billy McCave.

Congratulations to all the new firefighters for their dedication and willingness to persevere through a tough course.

The next initial class for EMT training will start on Aug. 22 and run through Dec. 10. You may sign up for this class at station #21 in Star Valley, or call the station for more information at (928) 474-3835. The cost of the class is $750.

The next meeting of the Fireflies will be on Monday, June 6 at 1 pm. There was an overflow in the meeting room in Tonto Village last month and the room was too small.

It was decided to hold the next meeting in Star Valley in their training room, which is large enough for all the Fireflies, and more ladies from Star Valley might like to attend a meeting that is closer to home.

One of the future projects the Fireflies are working on is creating a cookbook entitled “Fireflies Can Cook Too,” and they are now compiling recipes. Penny Wells is the chairperson for this project and she would like you to email her your recipes at pennykaye @gmail.com.The Fireflies hope to begin selling the cookbook by next year.

Fire restrictions

The Tonto National Forest still has fire restrictions in effect, which means no campfires within the forest. Please abide by the rules to help save our forest.

If you see a campfire, please report it to the Sheriff’s Office at (928) 474-2208. DO NOT confront the offenders — it is the duty of the Sheriff’s Office to tell the people of the violations.

The free range cattle are still roaming around the forest in Tonto Village. Please be very cautious driving through the village and please do not let children or dogs harass the cattle. This situation could become hazardous to the children and to motorists if the cattle are driven to the roadways.

Thursday night turned out to be a mix of ladies and guys playing eight ball. The winners were Tim Reed, Ethel Cain and Ron DesRochers. Congratulations to all the winners.

Ethel announced that there will be special entertainment on the ‘patio’ provided by the popular Lynda St. John on May 29 and May 30. Lynda will be playing from noon until 2 p.m .each day. Come and listen to her rendition of some of your favorite songs.
