A Flagstaff man died Monday after his vehicle rolled down a 200-foot embankment south of Pine on Highway 87.

Kenneth Dean Ainsworth, 60, was heading southbound in a gray Honda just south of the Tonto Natural Bridge turnoff when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle left the right hand shoulder and plummeted 200 feet

over the side of the highway, said a Department of Public Safety spokesperson.

The Honda rolled down the hill until it came to a stop on its side against a tree at the bottom of the canyon.

When emergency crews arrived around 11:10 a.m., Ainsworth was already dead, said Pine-Strawberry Fire Chief David Staub.

Staub noted there was already one large white cross at milepost 262 where another accident had occurred.

I wonder if the large white cross distracted the driver. Some states DONOT allow roadside markers for just that reason.
