Fly Your Flag And Honor Our Veterans Today

Today is Veterans Day, 2011. Please fly your flag and observe this day in some way to honor our heroes.

The veterans who have lost their lives for all of us so that we could stay free in the United States, and the ones who are still fighting to keep us free. I have had uncles in WWII, a husband in Korea, brothers in the Vietnam War, and now a grandson in Afghanistan. I especially honor them on this day.

Veteran’s Day started out as Armistice Day because of the ‘armistice’ signing of the Treaty of Versailles between the allies and Germany. The treaty was signed on the eleventh hour, of the eleventh day on the eleventh of November.

The name was changed to Veterans Day to honor all veterans of all wars. Please do not forget our servicemen and women on this day.

Hellsgate Fire Department

There have been articles in the Roundup for a few weeks now regarding the St. Vincent de Paul food bank and the severe shortage that they are experiencing.

With the help of all the firefighters and the Fireflies Auxiliary, there will be a non-perishable food drive from now until Christmas. The items can be dropped off at the Hellsgate Fire stations in Star Valley, Tonto Village and Mead Ranch. The Fireflies will take all the items collected to the food bank.

Please help out by giving what you can, even if it is only a few cans of food. Every little bit helps. If the drop-off places are inconvenient for you, go straight to the food bank location at St. Philip’s Church.

Cookbook

The Fireflies Auxiliary is still working on the upcoming cookbook, “Fireflies Can Cook” for a publishing date sometime next summer. Recipes are still being collected and the deadline is Dec. 31 for your favorite recipes to be included. It is so easy to send them too, just get online and send them to vleigh@earth link.net, pennykaye@ymail.com or janet snyder2001@yahoo.com.

If you do not have email access, please mail the recipes to Hellsgate Fire Department, 82 Walters Lane, Star Valley, AZ, and earmark the envelope ‘recipes.’ If you have a really special one that your mother or grandmother made, include a little anecdote about your memories of that recipe.

The administrative office of Hellsgate Fire Department in Star Valley will be closed on Nov. 25 in observance of Thanksgiving Day. The office will reopen on Monday Nov. 28.

The Leadership class #I is scheduled for Nov. 12 and 13 and still has a few openings. Call the fire station at 474-3835 as soon as possible to sign up. The #II class will start on Dec. 3 and 4. Karen will then tell you the place and times for the classes.

Birthdays, etc.

Payson Mayor Kenny Evans will celebrate his birthday on Nov. 17.

Maurine Kirchhoefer of Tonto Village III will blow out her candles on Nov. 19.

Jimmy ‘Rabbit’ Stephenson adds another birthday on Nov. 21 and Hellsgate firefighter and paramedic George Karrys of Tonto Village II shares that day with Jimmy Rabbit. Happy birthday to all of you.

Pastor James Barker of the Tonto Village Chapel, and his wife Bernita will celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary on Nov. 22. May God bless the two of you on your special day.

Double D Doings

The nine-ball competition between the Tonto Village gals and the Christopher Creek gals was held at the Double D this past Tuesday evening.

Nanci Olson of Christopher Creek shot for first place, Kara Shaw of Tonto Village III came in at second place and Marie Leonard took third place.

The players were pleasantly surprised by a former nine-ball player, Sue Prach. Sue has been with her relatives on the east coast while she is undergoing therapy and she surprised everyone by coming to play pool with them again. It was great to see her again.
