Robert Basal was born in Gallitzin, Pa.
Mr. Basal served his country in World War II. He was involved in five landings on Japanese occupied islands including the island of “Atto,” which had very high casualties.
He received two Purple Hearts and 23 additional medals including the Bronze Star.
After the war, Mr. Basal attended Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. He became a school teacher through the GI Bill.
Mr. Basal served in the reserves for many years as a retired lieutenant colonel.
He also had the opportunity to travel the world and contributed a lot to many organizations.
Robert Basal was my uncle, he was a very giving spirit indeed.
