First Friday

Join the merchants and organizations on Payson’s Historic Main Street for First Friday festivities from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Friday, Oct. 7.

There’s something for everyone — music, food and fun people along the street. Another new business is welcomed to Main Street with this month’s celebration: DK Realty, 617 W. Main St. in Curtis Johnson’s Farmers Insurance.

Rim Country Hombrewers Greg, Tom and Scott will be at Down the Street Art Gallery, Farmers Insurance and DK Realty. Stop by and learn about the art of home brewing and get a free chance to win prizes.

Start the day off with a visit to the Time Out Thrift Shop at the northwest corner of Beeline Highway and Wade Lane where there are specials offered for the First Friday celebration from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Also planned for First Friday:

• At the Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., the Starlighters perform and there will be a Soup & Salad dinner. Guests get a choice of one of three different soups, a salad, dinner roll, dessert and a drink for only $5. All proceeds go to the children’s programs at the Community Presbyterian Child Learning Center.

The shuttle bus will be running too, so park at the church, eat dinner and then hitch a ride up and down Main Street.

• At Bootleg Alley Antiques, Brandon Shepard will perform country and light rock. Cooking gourmet brats from Charlie’s Meats will be Chef Gary Bedsworth and Diane Frederick Bedsworth. For $5 you can purchase a brat with all the trimmings, chips and a soda. All proceeds benefit PAWS. Gatherers can also treat themselves to SCOOPS ice cream.

• The Artists of the Rim Gallery is using the occasion to feature recent work by its artist/partners. In order to better showcase this new work, they plan a “Major Changeover” to create a “new look.”

• Down the Street Art Gallery will be having an opening of a new show of member artists’ interpretation of “Dia de los Muertos” or Day of the Dead, which includes sculptures, baskets, paintings jewelry and gourd art. Dia de los Muertos is a Latin American holiday taking place Nov. 1 and Nov. 2. Families go to cemeteries to honor and be with the souls of the departed. Stop in for a treat while viewing members’ take on the skulls (calaveras) and skeletons (calacas) used in these celebrations.

Moose dinner

The Moose Lodge will host a dinner and dance from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday Oct. 7.  The double entrée dinner of chicken Marsala and roasted pork loin will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The music by Junction 87 will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The price is $20 per person or $35 per couple. Music only may be enjoyed for $5 per person. Proceeds will go to the Lodge’s local high school scholarship fund. Tickets will be pre sold, no dinner tickets will be sold at the door.

Payson Care Center Yard Sale

The Payson Care Center will have its Annual Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8, 107 E. Lone Pine Dr., Payson.

There will be lots of good stuff — clothes, household items, decor items, tools and more.

Craft Sale benefit

A craft sale to benefit Greg Day of Macky’s will be held from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9 at Sawmill Crossing.

The show will feature handcrafted items perfect for gifts and home. Proceeds from the booths and raffle ticket sales will be donated to help with medical costs for Greg Day.

The grand prize is a matinee for two at Sawmill Theatres, dinner for two at Cardo’s, dessert for two at Scoops, plus there are more than 20 other raffle items. Raffle tickets are $1 each or six for $5.

Lioness Bake Sale and more

The Payson Lioness Club is holding a by donation Bake Sale fund-raiser in front of Walmart from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 8. Also available will be jewelry and 2012 Calendars. All proceeds go back to the public, benefitting Payson area charities.

Craft Fair

The Ponderosa Chapter #65, Order of the Eastern Star Annual Craft Fair, will be presented from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 and Sunday, Oct. 9 at 200 E. Rancho Road. The event features crafters from all over the state, a bake sale and prizes, plus, on Saturday, food prepared by the Masonic Lodge Brothers.

Zane Grey Days Art & Crafts Bazaar

The 14th Zane Grey Day Weekend Arts & Crafts Bazaar is set to open free to the public at 9 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 for a two-day event on the Gila County Courthouse grounds at Frontier and Beeline Highway, across from the Payson Post Office.

Artisans and crafters from Payson and elsewhere will sell their fine, handcrafted works of art and other products.

A variety of native, ethnic and American foods will be also be available.

AARP driving class

A driving class for seniors will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Payson Senior Circle, 215 N Beeline Highway. The instructor will be Doug Eckert.

Historical Society Pioneer Cemetery tour

The Northern Gila County Historical Society will present a free tour of the Payson Pioneer Cemetery with historian Jinx Pyle at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8.

Participants should meet at the cemetery for the tour, which will last approximately one hour. There is no need to sign up at the museum for the tour. However, an optional lunch afterward will be offered at the Lone Pine Hotel for $6 per person, plus tax, and registration is required for it. Sign up at the museum. Flea Market and Boutique

The Rim Country Republican Club will have a Flea Market and Boutique from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 at Rumsey Park Ramada 5, 400 N. McLane, west of the Payson Public Library.

There will be craft booths and flea market offerings, sandwiches and hotdogs from MoJoe’s, ice cream and drinks from Scoops.

Special guest, Sheriff of the Year Paul Babeu, Pinal County Sheriff, will discuss border issues from noon to 1:30. There will be other elected officials present as well.

Glaze Ministries seminar

Payson Living Word Bible Church, 500 E. Rancho Road (Payson Elementary School), and Pastors Cliff and Linda Richey invite Rim Country residents and visitors to join them in a joyful, exciting and contagious celebration of Jesus and His goodness. Terrell and Beverly Glaze will be ministering with singing, preaching and testimonies through their Discover Your God-Given Gifts seminar at 10 a.m., Saturday, Oct. 8 and at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 9.

Glaze is a preacher, accomplished musician, and enthusiastic singer of all types of Christian music who delivers a message of hope, encouragement and joy.

Oktoberfest at the Elks

Elks and guests are welcome to the Payson Elks Oktoberfest Saturday, Oct. 8 at the Lodge, 1206 N. Beeline Highway. No-host cocktails start at 5 p.m., a complete German Bavarian Style dinner will be served a 6 p.m. and special beer will be available to the first 100 people. Victor and Lucia, along with the Past Exalted Rulers are preparing the dinner. Dr. Jass and the Heartbeats will provide entertainment from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Tickets are $12 per person and available at the Lodge bar.

Oct. 9 Sunday
