Arts & Crafts sale

The Mogollon Health Alliance will be having an Arts & Crafts Sale from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 14 and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15 at the Mogollon Health Alliance Activity Center (next to the Almost New Thrift Shop at 304 E. Aero Dr.).

Stop by to see hand-crafted items for the holidays and other gift-giving opportunities: potato bags, scarves, Christmas items, wreathes, jewelry, aprons and purses, bird feeders, afghans, baby blankets, baby bibs, tissue box covers, jewelry, dog blankets, scarves, pillows, hats, catnip toys, dish clothes, pot holders, tote bags, PJs, cloth books and much more.

Brush pit schedule

This coming weekend, the Regional Payson Area Project … for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

Saturday, Oct. 15 the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

Sunday, Oct. 16 the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., the Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. Properly bagged Yellow Starthistle, or other listed noxious weed species will also be accepted and will be burned. No household garbage, construction debris, or other items will be accepted.

RPAP brush pits are intended for the use of private citizens who are working to clear their properties for wildfire risk reduction and to create defensible space around their homes. They are not intended for commercial use, and use by commercial haulers is prohibited.  

Cystic Fibrosis Great Strides event

On Saturday, Oct. 15 take steps to cure cystic fibrosis by participating in the Great Strides event.

Cystic fibrosis is a life-threatening, genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive systems of tens of thousands of children and young adults. Great Strides is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s nationwide fund-raising walk, which raises money to support vital CF research. It is a great way for friends, families and co-workers to come together and make a difference.

Flu shots available

Mesa del Fire Prevention and Public Safety Day

The Houston Mesa Fire Department, along with the Caballo Club and the HMFD Auxiliary, are presenting a Community Fire Prevention and Public Safety Day from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 15. There will be fire tucks on display, ambulances, Gila County Sheriff canine unit, Native Air helicopter, public education trailer, hand-outs, safety demonstrations, kids’ activities, drawings for smoke detectors, food and free ice cream for the kids from Scoops.

The event will be located at the firehouse and Caballo Club park next door in Mesa del Caballo.

Payson has Fire Prevention Week open houses planned

Payson’s 2011 Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 9-15, concludes tomorrow with open houses at the Payson Fire Department’s three stations.

The open houses will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Station 11, 400 W. Main St.; Station 12, 108 E. Rancho Road; and Station 13, 103 S. Rim Club Drive, the newest station directly across the highway and east of Payson Concrete.

Main Street memories

The history of Payson’s Main Street will be featured in vivid photographs and narrated by local writer and educator Pat “Gail” Hearne at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Oct. 17 in the Payson Library Community Room. This presentation will include facts about the people, buildings and events on Main Street in Payson’s early days, including the rodeo, the Herron Hotel, the historic rock schoolhouse and teacher Julia Randall.

Learn about lymphedema

Denise Miller, a Payson Care Center occupational therapist, will discuss lymphedema and answer questions on this condition at 11 a.m., Monday, Oct. 17 at Mountain Bible Church, 302 E. Rancho Rd.

Lymphedema is a serious condition involving the lymphatic, circulatory and immune systems. Causes of lymphedema include cancer, infection or trauma. Treatment includes manual lymph drainage, exercise, compression wraps and compression garments.

Flu shot clinics at schools

The Gila County Health Department is scheduling flu shot clinics at area schools.

The clinics are from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., and students must have a consent form signed by their parent or legal guardian to participate. The clinics are:

• Oct. 18, Rim Country Middle School

• Oct. 26, Payson Elementary School

If a consent form for your child is not received a week prior to their school’s clinic, a form can be picked up at the nurse’s office or the county health department. For more information, call the Gila County Health Department at (928) 474-1210.

Focus on fixed income seminar

Edward Jones Financial Advisor G. Scott Flake of Payson will host a free 60-minute educational seminar titled “Focus on Fixed Income” at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 310 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson, AZ 85541.

During the seminar, participants will learn about different types of fixed-income investments, such as bonds and certificates of deposit, and how they can work together to help investors reach their financial goals, like receiving a regular, stable income from investments.

Artrageous Fair at Payson Library

Youth art classes are planned at the Payson Public Library over the next couple of weeks. The classes are free, but seating is limited and registration is required.

A photography class for those 10 to 14 will be offered from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 18. The teacher is Bessie Tucker of the library staff. Students will need to bring their digital cameras.

A freehand drawing class will be taught to children ages 5 to 10 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25 by Joe Klein.
