Halloween Is A Few Days Off, Are You Ready?

There’s only a few more days until Halloween — parents are you ready?

Have you helped your kiddies figure out what to wear for that big candy day? Over the past few years, the amount of kids “trick or treating” has diminished. There are more house parties and more organized events for the kids to celebrate that “spooky” day.

In a way it is a good thing because of some “crazies” out there who would ruin this fun day for the kids with “spiked” candy and now moms have to be so careful where the kids go and then to inspect all the “loot” the kids bring home. What a sad state of affairs our lives have become.

Speaking of organized Halloween events, The Christopher-Kohl’s Fire Department is putting on a Halloween party at the fire station on Friday, Oct. 28. All firefighters, police and EMS personnel are invited along with their families. An RSVP is required so that they know how much food to prepare. There will be brats and hot dogs and much more. Please contact by e-mail: linda@ckfire.org to sign up for more details.

Cattle drive

Well, most of the cattle have been persuaded to head to a warmer climate in Little Green Valley except there are a few of them who do not want to go and must have been hiding out when the drovers came through. As I look out my office window, there are at least a half dozen of those critters still hanging around.

Maybe they like the great eating. There are so many apples that have fallen from the trees that they are filling themselves up with them.

Do cattle get stomach aches? I spoke with a resident in Bear Flat and they have a brown cow who looks as if she is pregnant. Will the drovers come back for these strays?

I hope so.

Hellsgate Fire Department

The Fireflies Auxiliary put on an appreciation dinner for all the firefighters and their families last Thursday evening, Oct. 20, at the Star Valley station.

The event turned out to be a huge success. The firefighters were very appreciative of the great food prepared by the Firefly treasurer, Linda Stailey. A big thank you to you Linda, and to all the Fireflies who helped serve and set up for all the firefighters and their families. It was a good opportunity for all the stations to get together and socialize.

The Hellsgate Fire Department has announced that there will be Leadership I and II classes offered on Nov. 12 and 13 for leadership #I and Dec. 3 and 4 for Leadership #II. Call Karen at station #21 in Star Valley to sign up and for more details for place and times. The number is 928-474-3835.

The office will be closed in observance of Veterans Day on Nov. 11.

The November fire board meeting has been scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the Star Valley station beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the meeting room. The meetings are always open to the public and questions and comments are encouraged.

On Friday, Nov. 4, a disaster drill will be held at Payson Regional Medical Center in the parking lot.

The drill will assume that a dirty bomb has been detonated in Phoenix and the drill will be to decontaminate patients from that explosion. Be prepared to park in other places during this drill. Firefighters from the surrounding area will take part in the drill.

Hellsgate Fire Chief Gary Hatch is attending the conference of fire chiefs around the country this week. The event is being held in Boston.

Chief Hatch is the president of the Arizona Fire Chiefs Association and he is representing all Arizona fire concerns. All the fire chiefs will be making recommendations regarding fire concerns from each state and will be presenting that information to Congress.

There will be a hose testing for all five-inch hoses from the fire departments in the area on Nov. 5 in back of the Bashas’ supermarket.

Harry Weldon and J.P. Matchner are the newest firefighters in the department and they are eagerly welcomed into the Hellsgate family. Good luck to you both with all of your necessary classes to become a full-fledged firefighter.

Clint and Grace Daniels of Tonto Village III will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary on Nov. 2.

What a milestone! They will be taking a cruise with one of their daughters and son-in- law to really celebrate the event. Happy anniversary to you both. On Nov. 5, Ron and Lonie Smith of Ellison Creek Summer Homes will celebrate 51 years of marriage. To Clint and Grace and Ron and Lonie: Your life together is an inspiration, Happy anniversary to both couples.
