The Payson Longhorns survived several fumbles and center-quarterback snap exchange muffs to cage the Globe Tigers 27-7 in both team’s regular season finales.
Playing Oct. 28 in Globe, the Horns took a 14-0 lead into the halftime locker room on two long scoring passes from sophomore quarterback Tyrus Sarnowski to tailback Aaron Barnes and later to tight end Cale Novack.
With the win, Payson wraps up the season with a 4-6 mark but did not receive a berth into the Division IV “state” tournament. Globe finished with a 3-6 record and will also not advance.
For the state tournament, a trio of former 3A East teams claimed the top three seeds. Blue Ridge is advancing as No. 1, Snowflake takes the No. 2 berth and defending state champion Show Low received the No. 3 seed.
