Sometimes you are your own worst enemy.
Such was the case Sept. 2 in Payson High School Stadium where Longhorn mistakes, miscues and penalties spelled the demise of the purple pride in a 35-6 loss to the Camp Verde Cowboys.
Horn blunders and lapses of focus coupled with the spectacular play of Cowboy quarterback Deshon Tripp resulted in an uneasy evening most Payson High fans would rather forget.
Tripp was a one-man wrecking crew throwing TD passes of 32 and 74 yards and running for another.
But the sting that hurt Payson most was the unofficial 15-plus penalties that seemed to stifle the offense and defense at every turn.
With the loss, Payson falls to 1-1 on the year.
