Northern Gila County Fair

The 57th Annual Northern Gila County Fair will be held Sept. 9, 10 and 11 at the Payson Event Center. The fair opened to the public at 9 a.m. today, Friday, Sept. 9, and exhibits will close at 6 p.m. The exhibition tent is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 and from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11.

See displays of FFA and 4H livestock projects, as well as livestock and small animals submitted for judging by area residents in the open divisions; agriculture, horticulture and floriculture entries; homemaking arts; domestic science projects; canning; hobbies and handicrafts; minerals and lapidary; fine arts; photography; and more.

The 4H Club has collected recipes and compiled them into an attractive, keepsake cookbook which will be available for $10 each in the 4H Animal Tent, from any member of the organization or from Connie Cockrell, (928) 478-6792.

Events planned for the arena on Friday, Sept. 9 are: buddy showmanship, 3 p.m.; open livestock show, 4 p.m.; 4H/FFA livestock judging and show, 5 p.m.; 4H speed events, 6 p.m.; and 4D Barrel Race, 7:30 p.m. Admission to the arena events is $5 per car.

At the arena on Saturday, Sept. 10, the events are: 4H and open horse show, 8 a.m.; small livestock show, 9 a.m.; and livestock auction, 5 p.m. Admission to the arena events is $5 per car.

Don’t miss the Demolition Derby at 1 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 11 (gates open at 11:30 a.m.). Admission is $10 for adults; $15 for those 13 to 4; with those 3 and younger admitted free of charge.

Free brush disposal

The Regional Payson Area Project….for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:

On Saturday, Sept. 10, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.

On Sunday, Sept. 11, the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.

All RPAP free drop-off locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. No household garbage, construction debris or other items will be accepted, and use by commercial haulers is prohibited.

Community Yard Sale

The Community Presbyterian Church Deacons will be having a Community Yard Sale from 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Sept. 10. Come shop for bargains at 800 W. Main St.

Unity yard sale

Unity of Payson will have a fund-raising yard sale from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at 1500 N. Far View in Alpine Heights. For more information, call (928) 468-0961.

There will be furniture, tools, clothes, antiques, rugs, fishing equipment, etc.

Fresh roasted chiles at the Payson Farmers Market

Locally grown, fresh roasted chiles are available at the Payson Farmers Market.

Marketgoers can also see what’s new from Rim Country artists and listen to tunes by Anne James. 

Winners of the Sept. 3 Watermelon Seed Spitting contest: are 9-year-old Faith McGinnis, spitting 21 feet; and Colby Emery, spitting 34 feet, 6 inches.

The Payson Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday at 816 S. Beeline Highway, behind Chili’s.

Beth Moore simulcast at Mountain Bible Church

Mountain Bible Women’s Ministry will present a Beth Moore Simulcast, “Life-Changing Bible Study — Inspiring Worship,” from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at Mountain Bible Church, 302 E. Rancho Road, Payson.

Sports card show and sale

Young people, ages 9 to 16, will be selling and trading their sports cards and other types of cards from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Payson Public Library. The library will provide the space, pizza, soda and great sports prize giveaways during the event.

Pine Shop Hop

Shops and galleries in Pine will be open with special attractions for the Second Saturday Shop Hop in Pine Sept. 10.

This month, Myra’s Gallery will also have children’s activities between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. with the children painting murals thanking our firefighters for protecting our forests and our homes.

Other shops participating in the Shop Hop are Pine by Design, Moose Mountain and Pine Country Antiques

Book signing

Rim Country residents and visitors who want a real taste of the historic Rim Country need to get down to the Northern Gila County Historical Society museum between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10.

The NGCHS is hosting a book signing for Jayne Peace Pyle, author of Git A Rope Publishing’s latest release, “Recipes from Anna Mae’s Kitchen.”

The museum is located just north of Main Street in Green Valley Park.

Covenant 31 performs

Covenant 31 will perform at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Church of the Nazarene, 200 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson (across from Home Depot).

Christian concert at First Southern Baptist

Wade Hammond, award-winning Christian recording artist/songwriter will be in concert at 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 10 at First Southern Baptist Church of Payson. The church is located at the corner of Bonita and Colcord Roads, west of Denny’s.

9-11 Remembrance Services

As we take time to reflect on the 10th Anniversary of a day none of us will ever forget, let us come together to grieve, to remember, to express our gratitude to those who demonstrated what it is to be a hero, and to pledge ourselves to live in honor of their bravery.

Benefit raffle

Bootleg Alley Antiques & Art is raffling off a top-of-the-line new Tony Lama jacket.  Tickets are $5 each. All proceeds go to Greg Day, owner of Macky’s Grill, as he battles cancer.

Raffle tickets can be purchased at the Payson Roundup, 708 N. Beeline Highway; Rim Country Chamber of Commerce, 100 W. Main St.; and at Bootleg Alley Antiques & Art, 520 W. Main St. 

The drawing is at noon, Sunday, Sept. 11.

Jazz concert

The John Darst Jazz Quartet will perform in concert at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11 at the Payson Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St.

Performing will be John Darst, guitar and vocals; Bob Veltre, guitar; Chris Long, bass; and Gerry Reynolds, drums.

A $5 minimum donation is requested at the door and includes refreshments.
