The Payson Men’s Golf Association representatives in the Arizona Golf Association State Championship two-man scramble have been selected via a local qualifying tournament.
Ron Fischer and Bill Shedd will compete in the Super Senior, 70-years-plus division, having advanced by virtue of the 5.08 net score. Larry Smith and Chip Yeoman are destined for the gross qualifying with a card of 64. Troy Neal and Ed Flores advance to state as a low net qualifier with a 53.7.
Actually, John Calderwood and Ross Robertson finished at 53.2 and qualified for state, but other commitments prohibited them from competing.
All earned the right to compete on the statewide level by winning a qualifying tournament held Wednesday, Sept. 21 at Payson Golf Course.
“Each golf course across the state conducts qualifying tournaments,” said PMGA tournament chairman Larry Vincent.
For the next level, the Payson teams will compete Nov. 2 at Lone Tree Golf Club in Chandler.
“If they place high enough there, they will go on to the (finals),” Vincent said.
That tournament will be played Dec. 12 at Encanterra Country Club in Queen Creek.
On Sept. 21 at PGC, closest-to-the-pin competition winners were Jessie Smith (No. 2; 10 feet, 10 inches), Rick Korth (No. 5; 1 foot, 2 inches), Tim Ernst (No. 8; 11 feet, 3 inches), Ed McFall (No. 14; 4 feet, 10 inches) and Phil Wagner (No. 17; 9 feet, 2 inches).
On Oct. 5 at PGC, PMGA members will hook up with their PWGA counterparts for the annual Buck and Doe tournament.
Low net turkey shoots will be played on Oct. 12 and Oct. 19.
The season wraps up Nov. 2.
