When the rhythm and blues vocal group The Whispers recorded the song “Just Gets Better with Time,” they could have been referring to Lady Longhorn pitcher Arianna Paulson.
It’s apparent she is getting better with time as evidenced by her 17 strikeouts in the Lady Horns’ March 29 win over Mingus that was followed up April 3 with a no-hit performance against Mogollon.
Showing great control and command, Paulson threw 41 strikes in 55 pitches over the course of 4 2/3 innings. The game ended early on the 10-run mercy rule.
If Paulson continues to progress as she has the first half of the season, the Lady Horns will be making some serious noise in the state playoffs when they begin later this month.
Paulson’s efforts vs. Mogollon, which included nine strikeouts, paced Payson to a 10-0 victory and improved the 2012 record to an impressive 19-3.
In addition to recording the no-hit gem, Paulson stroked a double and drove in a run.
As a team, the Horns pounded out 10 hits against an outmatched Mogollon pitching staff.
DeVann Runzo and school home run record holder Taylor Petersen stroked home runs. Runzo also drove in two runs.
Megan Wessel had two hits, one of which was a double and an RBI. Her twin sister Kaitlyn contributed two hits including a triple.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt as the Lady Horns took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first, expanded it to 5-0 in the second and 8-0 in the third before coasting to the win.
