Ted Pettet State Farm Insurance fought its way out of the losers’ bracket in the Town of Payson men’s basketball league to twice upset previously unbeaten Team HPR and win the tournament championship.
Playing April 12 at Rim Country Middle School, without Jason Schwein who had broken his arm a week before the championship showdown, State Farm whipped Team HPR 72-59 to force an “if” game for all the marbles.
In it, State Farm once again showed the mettle it takes to be a champion, winning a 61-54 thriller.
Pettet’s State Farm has long sponsored standout teams in town recreation leagues winning countless softball and basketball titles over the past three decades.
This year, eight teams competed in the league. In addition to State Farm-Ted Pettet, sponsors included HPR Ammunition, Neumann Paint, Tonto Apache Recreation, ERA Realty-Rory Huff and 1st Class Outdoors.
The Young Guns and The Comebacks were self-sponsored.
“Thanks to all the sponsors, players, spectators, staff and officials for a very good season,” said town recreation leader Mary Wolf.
Next up on the town calendar is the adult co-ed softball league, which currently has three openings.
The registration fee is $275 per team.
