Cougars, Pinecones Take First-Place Honors In 3-On-3 Basketball Tourney

The Cougars and Payson Pinecones played their way to first-place finishes in the Town of Payson-hosted 3-on-3 basketball tournament played Aug. 11 in Julia Randall Elementary School gymnasium.

The Cougars emerged victorious in the fifth- and sixth-grade tournament by defeating the Fantastic 3.

Porter Flake, Trevor Flores and B.J. Paulson were on the winning team.

In the 14- to 18-years tournament, the Pinecones teams of Kain England, Ron Picking and Cole Belcher claimed the gold by edging the silver medalist team of Go Ham. Austin Young, Justin Carlen and Ray Lott were on Go Ham.

During the past high school season, Belcher was a Division III all-state honorable mention recipient after averaging 11.4 points and 6.3 rebounds per game for the Longhorns.

The seventh- and eighth-grade league, Start Smart Basketball and the Longhorn Basketball Fundamentals Academy are next on the Parks, Recreation and Tourism agenda for aspiring young players.

Registration for the middle school/junior high league begins Sept. 12 and continues through Oct. 5. Games will be played Oct. 26 to Dec. 8 in the Rim Country Middle School gym. The fee is $30.

Registration for Start Smart, a program for children age 3 to kindergarten is Sept. 4 to Oct. 5.

Sessions will be held Oct. 20, 27, Nov. 3, 10 and 17 in JRE gym. The fee is $30.

The Fundamentals Academy is open to players in third through eighth grades and will be held Oct. 8 to 11 in Wilson Dome. The fee is $35. Registration is Sept. 1 to Oct. 2.

Retired Paradise Valley High School coach Bill Farrell and members of the PHS varsity will head the camp.
