Today (Tuesday) has been a step back in time because of a phone call to one of my oldest and dearest friends who is celebrating her birthday today. Phyllis has been my best friend since I was 12 years old and through the years of marriage, children and moving to different states, we have kept in touch. The friendship that we have shared has been a precious one and you come to realize just how important the people that make up your life are — they are an integral part of who you are. Even though we have not seen each other in many years, those years melt away when we get to talk with each other on the phone. Happy birthday to you, Phyllis. I cherish our friendship.
Hellsgate Fire Department
The Hellsgate Fire Board held their monthly meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Star Valley fire station. The information from the meeting will be in next week’s column.
Hellsgate Fire Department Auxiliary
The Fireflies had their monthly meeting on Monday morning to discuss the major benefit, the Labor Day Weekend Barbecue on Sept. 1. Each committee person has all of their supplies ready and their helpers assigned. The raffle tickets were also distributed to each Firefly to sell. The raffle items are the 20-inch Husqvarna chain saw, known as the Rancher, and a beautiful, handmade quilt that is in a paisley design with the major colors being blue and black. Ask any Firefly for a ticket for the drawing that will be held at 1:30 p.m. the day of the barbecue. The ticket prices are $1 for one or six for $5.
The Fireflies will also be at Bashas’ Food Festival on Aug. 18. Look for the fire truck at the entrance by Taco Bell. The firefighters will be doing blood pressure checks. The auxiliary members will be selling caps, sun visors, and T-shirts and advance dinner tickets for the barbecue. Hope to see you there.
Tonto Village Chapel
This past Sunday was a special day for the chapel. A former pastor, Ken Schroth, delivered the sermon for the congregation and after the church service there was a bountiful amount of food to be enjoyed by the parishioners. The day was spent with Pastor Ken catching up with former members of the congregation and reacquainting him and his wife Margaret on old friends. It was truly a special day. Thanks to Pastor James Barker for sharing his pulpit for the day.
On Aug. 14, Hellsgate firefighter Trina Stock will celebrate her birthday. On Aug. 15, Randy Slapnicka will have his big day. That same day, Tonto Village residents Eric and Maurine Kirchhoefer will observe their 33rd wedding anniversary.
On Aug. 17, Bear Flat resident Phon Sutton will add another candle to his birthday cake and so will Brenda Wilcox. Brenda is the wife of Pastor ‘Charlie’ who was a pastor at the Tonto Village Chapel for a few years. Brenda has also come back to the Village to play dominoes with the Divas. Happy birthday to all and happy anniversary to Eric and Maurine.
Since my column is a bit short this week, I will add a bit of humor from the Internet.
• Two aerial antennas meet on a roof, fall in love and get married. The ceremony wasn’t much, but the reception was excellent.
• A jumper cable walks into a bar. The bartender say, “I’ll serve you, but don’t start anything.”
• I used to eat a lot of natural foods until I learned that most people die of natural causes.
That’s all, folks. See you next week.
