As temperatures picked up in July, so did league play for the Payson Women’s Golf Association. It was a busy month, with the Flag Tournament, the Eclectic, and the start of the Medallion Tournament.

On July 3 the league played a Flag Tournament. The game involves adding your handicap to the course par, and when you reach that total on the course, you plant your flag. Whoever plants their flag the farthest out wins. Winning the Flag game was Judy Mackenzie, followed by Marilyn Schaal in second, Jeannie Griffin in third, Isabella Sockrider in fourth, and Mary Jones in fifth.

The rest of July was the Eclectic Tournament and the Medallion.

The Eclectic finished on July 31, but the Medallion will continue into August, due to a rainout day, and Medallion results will be in next month’s article.

Winning the A Flight of the Eclectic Tournament was Karen Peterson, followed by Claudia Bullard in second. Judy McFall won the B Flight, with Susan Torrens coming in second. The C Flight winner was Jan Burns, with Joyce Goff in second. New member Bette Walgren won the D Flight, with Marilyn Schaal coming in second.

Closest-to-the-pin winners were Marilyn Schaal and Donna Smid on July 3, Karen Peterson and Donna Smid on July 10, Claudia Bullard and Susan Torrens on July 17, and Claudia Thompson and Claudia Bullard on July 31. Play on July 24 was rained out.

June birdies were scored by Mary Jones, Karen Peterson (3), Claudia Bullard, Judy Mackenzie, Isabella Sockrider, Jan Burns and Shari Cody. June chip-ins were made by Isabella Sockrider and Mary Jones.

July birdies were recorded by Karen Peterson (5), Judy McFall (2), Jan Burns, Bette Walgren (2), Claudia Bullard (4) and Claudia Thompson.

The following ladies scored chip-ins in July: Judy McFall, Marcy Hewlett, Mary Cain, Bette Walgren and Susan Torrens.

Even though the summer is winding down, PWGA league play continues through October. It is never too late to join the fun on Tuesday mornings at the Payson Golf Course. Call Kelly O’Neill at (928) 363-0121 for more information.
