Another Rodeo Rides Into Town

The Mazatzal Hotel and Casino has partnered with the Southwest Indian Rodeo Association to host the 2012 Kenny Davis Regional Finals Rodeo at the Payson Event Center Saturday, Aug. 25. Performances will be at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Top Native American cowboys and cowgirls from Arizona and New Mexico will compete in the major rodeo events of senior team roping, junior barrel racing, junior steer riding and junior breakaway roping.

According to the SWIRA Web site, the rodeo will also include the eight standard Indian Finals Rodeo events: bull riding, bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, tie down (calf) roping; open team roping, ladies barrel racing and ladies breakaway roping. An added attraction planned for the event is a wild horse race.

The goal is to qualify for their respective events for the Indian National Finals Rodeo. The 37th Annual Indian National Finals Rodeo will be held in Las Vegas, Nev. At the Southpoint Hotel and Casino Equestrian Center Nov. 6-10, 2012.

Admission to the Payson event is $5 and a food concession will be on site. The Mazatzal Hotel and Casino and Southwest Indian Rodeo Association invite Rim residents and visitors to attend the rodeo.

Stock contractors for the Payson event are V Bar S Productions, which will provide the rough stock, and Destry Haught, who will provide the timed event stock.

This year’s event is in honor of longtime Tonto Apache Tribal Vice-Chair Kenny Davis. The Vice Chairman grew up in Payson and rode bulls at a young age. His daughter, Michele Dean, said her father never missed a rodeo event in Payson, rain or shine.

“Good luck to all the cowboys and cowgirls from the Davis family. Everyone come out and enjoy the show,” Dean said.
