Summer is coming to an end, and so is your chance to win some great prizes. Raffles are a good way community groups in Pine and Strawberry raise money for important causes while providing opportunities for participants to win some very desirable items. There are still plenty of tickets available for the 2012 raffles but you better hurry.

Ready, set, go - get your tickets!

On Sept. 2, at 2 p.m. in the Pine Library Activity Room — during the Labor Day Weekend Book Sale — the Friends of the Library will have their drawing for the spectacular Party Basket filled with wine, wine, and lots more wine. This basket has everything you need to have a party... just add cheese! Tickets are $1 each or six for $5 and can be purchased at the Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library or at the Friends Book Sale prior to 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 2. You must be 21 to buy tickets and to win this one.

The Riff-Raff Club’s fabulous Rifle Raffle will also come to an end on Sept. 2 with a drawing at 3 p.m. at the Sportsman’s Chalet in Strawberry. This raffle benefits needy children of Pine and Strawberry and offers many chances to win extraordinary prizes: Remington, Winchester and Ruger rifles, a 32-inch flat screen TV, gun case, curio cabinet and numerous gift certificates for artwork, camping gear, restaurants and more. Get your tickets at the Sportsman’s Chalet, Pine Hardware, Pine Creek Smokehouse, Karen’s Hairlooms or the Flying Grizzly for $1 each or six for $5.

The P/S Food Bank invites you to visit them in the Cultural Hall on Sept. 2 (during the Labor Day Arts and Crafts Festival) and purchase tickets to win the beautiful quilt on display to be raffled at 4 p.m. Earlier this year, the Quilt Angels quilting group held a Quilt-A-Thon for charity and completed the quilt to present to the food bank to raffle for critically needed funds. Every dollar raised goes directly to replenish the food bank and help our neighbors. This colorful and unique quilt created by angels could be yours with the winning number.

The Strawberry Patchers annual Opportunity Quilt drawing will take place this year at Moose Mountain Antiques in Pine on Dec. 6. Tickets can be purchased at the antique shop or during various community events and are $1 each or six for $5. You can also order them by mail by sending a check to Strawberry Patchers, P.O. Box 594, Pine, AZ 85544. To see the 2012 Opportunity Quilt or past years’ quilts and winners, visit www.strawberrypatchers.com.

Two amazing bikes have been put up for grabs by P/S Fuel Reduction and will be raffled at the awards ceremony for the Fire on the Rim Mountain Bike Race on Sept. 15. The bikes are a beautiful New Belgium bike donated by New Belgium Brewery and a $639 mountain bike donated by Hike, Bike and Run of Payson. Raffle tickets are $5. Look for volunteers selling tickets every weekend at Safeway in Payson or the Ponderosa Market in Pine. During the week, New Belgium bike raffle tickets are available at THAT Brewery and Pub in Pine and the mountain bike tickets are at the Rim Barbershop.

Labor Day Weekend Arts and Crafts Fest

Take a break from work and celebrate the last major holiday of the summer at the P/S Arts and Crafts Guild Labor Day Weekend Arts and Crafts Festival on Sept. 1 and 2.

This is the 32nd year that the local arts and crafts guild have sponsored a Labor Day weekend festival to help local charities and showcase the work of great Arizona artists and crafters. Consistent with all guild festivals, all entries are juried and must be the original, top-quality work of the artists and made right here in the U.S.A.

Bring your appetite as the event includes great food vendors, a pancake breakfast hosted by the P/S Fire Department and a Navajo taco fund-raiser by the P/S Senior Citizens Affairs Foundation (SCAF).

While at the festival, please visit the Pine Community Center Thrift Store operated by SCAF, where a variety of drinking glasses, cups, saucers and plates will be 50 percent off Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.

Library Friends Meeting and Book Sale

The Library Friends will hold their next meeting at 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 27 in the Library Activity Room. The guest speaker is Mario Belvedere and he will be speaking about Sicily, where he was born. The community is invited. Please join them and learn what the Library Friends are all about.

The Pine Library Friends Labor Day Book Sale is the weekend of Friday, Aug. 31, Saturday, Sept. 1 and Sunday, Sept. 2. in the Library Activity Room.

This is a chance to get some seriously great deals on books of every size and variety. You’ll find large print, audio and reference books and everything in between. In addition there are magazines, CDs, DVDs and more.

Thanks to everyone who comes out in support of the Library Friends to benefit the Isabelle Hunt Memorial Library’s programs and services in the P/S area.

Fire on the Rim Mountain Bike Race

Finally, the event we’ve been waiting for all year. The Fire on the Rim Mountain Bike Race returns to Pine on Sept. 14, 15 and 16.

Mountain bike riders from across the state will compete in a challenging race that tests their endurance and technical skills as they ride the Rim for a great cause. The race, sponsored by the Arizona Mountain Bike Association and P/S Fuel Reduction, Inc., promotes fire prevention and expansion of trails in the P/S fuel break. It’s guaranteed to be great fun with a spaghetti dinner, vendors, free camping, kids events, live music with Junction 87 and a beer garden.
