What a downpour Tonto Village had on Monday afternoon. In the span of about half an hour, the rain was measured at about an inch.
It was about time the rain finally found the Village, the storms have been just skirting around us. There was a lot of thunder and some lightning, which brought up a question between my hubby and I. What causes thunder? Which comes first, the thunder or lightning? When we were kids, my mother always told us that God was bowling in heaven and that a big boomer was when He hit a strike. What is the real answer?
Hellsgate Fire Department Auxiliary
The Fireflies had a very successful day at the Bashas’ Food Festival on Saturday, Aug. 18 — that is until dark clouds rolled in and sprinkles of rain started and all the vendors began packing up their wares, including the Fireflies. Up until that time, the sales of the Hellsgate T-shirts, caps, raffle tickets and cookbooks were going great guns. The attendance of auxiliary members was tremendous and very much appreciated and that also includes the firefighters who helped erect the pop-ups and also helped to break down. Fire Chief Gary Hatch along with firefighters Thorry Smith and Matt Highstreet and Captain John Wisner had those pop-ups down in no time.
The newest addition to the Hellsgate fleet of fire trucks was on display for the first time and was shown off proudly to the public. Even the inside smelled like a new vehicle. The truck is not fully equipped yet, but soon will be on the line for emergencies.
The Labor Day Barbecue is almost here — it will be at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 1 at the Tonto Village Fire Station, just off Johnson Blvd., next to Mathews Lane. The auxiliary is gearing up to serve the public the best deep pit BBQ sandwiches along with the best corn on the cob, plus peaches and cream. A bake sale is also planned and the committee has promised many more berry pies this year, along with homemade jams and jellies. The T-shirt committee has a large selection of T-shirts to sell, along with caps and sun visors with the Hellsgate logo.
The Modified Motorcycle Association will also be in the Village for the weekend. They will be camping out across from the Double D Bar.
The Arizona primary will be next week on Tuesday, Aug. 28. Most voters have been sent early ballots, but if you did not receive one, please go to the polling station in your area. For residents of Tonto Village and the surrounding area, ballots can be cast in Christopher Creek at the church on top of the hill. The parties that you belong to need your vote for the general election in November. Your vote does count, so do your part and go to the polls.
Sandy Kalmar from Christopher Creek is an avid dominoes player in the Village and celebrated her big day on Aug. 18. Happy belated birthday to you! Another domino player, Penny Wells, will add another candle to her birthday cake on Aug. 29.
Jeff Plante, a volunteer with the Hellsgate Fire Department, will be another year older on Aug. 30. Happy birthday to each of you.
Double D doings
There have not been any nine-ball players for a few weeks now, so no results. But there have been horseshoe competitions on Sunday afternoons in the patio area. Come and check it out.
