Gila County Treasurer Deborah Savage faced no opposition in the Democratic primary, but will face a challenge in the general election from Payson resident Don Ascoli, who ran unopposed in the Republican primary.
Chairman of the Gila County Republican Party, Ascoli says the longtime incumbent doesn’t do enough to communicate with voters about the county’s investing strategy and tax rates.
He wants to open a satellite office in North County, since currently everyone in the treasurer’s office works in Globe.
He advocates putting tax bills online, with links to each of the taxing authorities on the bill. He said the confusion about rising tax rates in the face of falling property values convinced him to run.
Savage maintains that Ascoli doesn’t have enough experience to run the office. She maintains her office has a long-established record of helping taxpayers understand their bills — and making arrangements when people come forward with a property tax bill they can’t afford to pay in a lump sum.
