Payson’s police department will add a new lieutenant by the end of January and new officers before the end of next year.

Payson Police Chief Don Engler said Sherwood Eldridge; the current police chief of Pinetop will start as his lieutenant after the first of the year.

“He owns a house in Payson and looks forward to returning to town,” said Engler.

Engler said the recent call out for applications attracted 169 people from Arizona and even out of state. Forty-five passed the application process and now face a background check.

Payson needs to fill seven slots that have been empty for the past year.

“We have six slots saved up at academies around Arizona,” said Engler, “We hope to get a seventh that already has training.”

Engler said does not see the new officers being street ready until August of next year at the earliest.
