Hashknife Part Of Upcoming Centennial Celebrations

Can you believe it? January is gone and February is here. February is a very important month for many reasons, but most important is that it is Arizona’s birthday on Feb. 14, in becoming 100 years young!

There are many celebrations going on in the state of various kinds. Just check out the newspaper for a list of activities from around the state. One event that is close to home is the Hashknife riders. They will be making stops in Christopher Creek and Payson to pick up the mail and carry the mail to Scottsdale.

Again, check the newspaper for the exact dates and times they will be passing through.

February is also National Heart Month, so check with your physician to see if you need a checkup.

How could anyone forget St. Valentine’s Day on Feb. 14. The stores in Payson have had the decorations up for a few weeks already, and of course loaded with all kinds of chocolate candy and boxed hearts. Don’t forget your sweetie with candy or flowers. The florists have a great selection of arrangements as well as the grocery stores selling bouquets. Plus don’t forget to say those three little words that mean so much, “I Love You.”

There is also another holiday this month that is lesser known. It is Presidents Day on Feb. 20. President Lincoln’s birthday on Feb. 12 and President George Washington’s birthday on Feb. 22 will be celebrated on Feb. 20.

Another important day to remember by some of us is the start of Lent on Feb. 22, which lasts until Easter which is on April 8. There are many people who give up something for the time between Lent and Easter. I have tried, but sometimes if it’s chocolate I give up, I can never get all the way through until Easter.

Hellsgate Fire Department

The February fire board meeting will be on Wednesday, Feb. 8. The meeting will be held at the Star Valley fire station #21 on 80 S. Walters Lane. The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m.

The administration office has now made it easier for everyone to pay for special classes such as EMT classes, etc. and to buy Hellsgate T-shirts and caps, etc. A system has been installed to allow people to use credit cards for their purchases or to pay for classes that are offered by the fire department. That is certainly great news.

Hellsgate Fire Dept. Auxiliary/Fireflies

The Fireflies are waiting anxiously for the first meeting of the year. They are attentively setting the date as the first or second week in April.

The Fireflies are always looking for new members and they are invited to any of the meetings that will be held from April to October. The auxiliary has been very helpful in assisting the fire department with helping candidates for paramedic school, bought a new generator for fire station #22, purchased a cooking range for the meeting room, and purchased two 5,000-gallon reserve water tanks for station #22.

The Fireflies exist for the fire department in assisting them to become a more efficient fire department and to help with financing items when needed.

If you would like to volunteer your time to a great organization, this is for you! Your participation not only helps the fire department but also boosts your self-esteem by doing something for your community.

This year, the auxiliary is working on the big raffle items that are raffled off at the Labor Day BBQ. One of the members, Linda Stailey, has finished a beautiful quilt that she has worked on this past winter. And as always, one of the best-selling items is a chain saw, and this year is no different. The tickets will be available for sale sometime in April.

A former resident of the Village, Phyllis Ballard added another birthday on Feb. 1. Phyllis is the former Phyllis Mullen who had sold many of the homes in Tonto Village. Phyllis visits just about every year to get reacquainted with her neighbors and friends. Happy birthday to you, Phyllis.

On Feb. 4, Julie Hatch adds another candle to her birthday cake. Julie is the wife of Hellsgate fire chief Gary Hatch. Julie has been very helpful with the Fireflies functions and that help is greatly appreciated. Happy birthday to you, Julie.

Another former villager who returns just about every year to visit is Lorraine ‘Bo’ Mathews. Bo played pool with the Double D players and was the former secretary of the Christopher/Kohl’s Fire Department and made many friends. Bo’s birthday is on Feb. 5. Have a wonderful day, Bo.

Also on Feb. 5 is Hellsgate Fire Department Captain John Wisner. It is not known how many candles are needed for his birthday cake, but I would advise to have a fire extinguisher handy. Happy birthday to you, John.

Double D Doings

Last but not least is the results of the Double D gals vs. the Christopher Creek gals for their weekly competition in nine-ball. The Christopher Creek gals took first and second places. The winners were Patty Adams and Judy Tolle. Coming in third was Villager Ethel Cain. Congratulations to the Christopher Creek gals.
