Members of the Knights of Columbus — the charitable organization of Catholic men — raised more than $1,600 to honor and donate to the Payson/Gila County Special Olympics program.

Longtime Knight Dave Engleman spoke at a recent breakfast meeting at which the funds were donated to Special Olympics.

Engleman said that a significant number of Knights put faith into action over comfort, as they braved quite cold temperatures outside area supermarkets.

They gave away Tootsie Rolls for free to anyone entering a store, and depended upon folks leaving loose change or small bills in the donation box for the Special Olympics fund-raiser. The fund-raiser was a big success, raising among the highest totals in recent years.

The fund-raiser for Special Olympics has been done by the Knights for more than a decade. It has helped to fund various programs in Payson, in Gila County and in other events participated in by the local Special Olympics organization.
