Calderwood, Lindo Are Pmga’S Two-Man, Best-Ball Champs


John Calderwood and Ralph Lindo played their way to championship honors in the Payson Men’s Golf Association-hosted Two-Man Best Ball Tournament June 20 and June 27 at Payson Golf Course.

In winning, the pair carded a 113 with single round totals of 58 and 55.

With a 116 (61 and 55) the team of Tim Ernst and Mike McKee was second.

Don Combs and Terry Gaden posted a 116 (59-57) to finish third in a scorecard playoff.

Gary Campbell and Terry Lindsey finished at 117 (57 and 60) and were fourth.

In closest-to-the-pin play during the June 20 shootout, PMGA spokesman and former high school basketball coach Herb Sherman was among the winners hitting to within 3 feet, 4 inches on an ace on No. 8. Alex Armenta (No. 17; 5 feet, 10 inches), Larry Smith (No. 14; 2 feet, 4 inches), Jessie Smith (No. 5; 7 feet, 7-1/2 inches) and Campbell (No. 2; 10 feet, 5-1/2 inches were also winners.

During the June 27 tournament, Campbell was again a winner swatting to within 9 feet, 3 inches on No. 2.

Popeye Clay (No. 14; 7 feet, 8-1/2 inches), Ernst (No. 8; 11 feet, 11-1/2 inches), McKee (No. 5; 11 feet 7 inches) and Lindo (No. 17; 9 feet) were also winners.

In the PMGA’s “Best Dressed” contest, Frank Szakal won on June 20 and Oscar Garcia took home honors the following week.
