Law Enforcement EXPO and K-9 Demonstration tonight

The annual “Dog’ed Daze of Summer, Law Enforcement EXPO and K-9 Demonstration” takes place Tuesday, July 17 at the Payson Event Center, 1400 S. Beeline Highway, across from the Mazatzal Hotel & Casino. Gates open at 4 p.m. and the demonstration starts at 7 p.m.

Police dogs, handlers and trainers from all over the U.S. and Canada will attend the annual K-9 Officers Survival Seminar.

New this year is a Law Enforcement EXPO with events and displays from various agencies. The Arizona Law Enforcement Canine Association will accept donations at the gate to help sponsor the event.

Volunteers wanted for rodeo

The Payson Rodeo Committee needs volunteers to put on the 2012 World’s Oldest Continuous Rodeo. Help is needed in areas like ticket takers, the souvenir booth, 50/50 ticket sales, security and other non-livestock areas.

PHS registration continues

Payson High School registration is under way. Registration will start in the auditorium and end at the PHS bookstore in the administration building.

This year, parents/guardians must bring a copy of their Arizona driver’s license or a utility bill to prove residency.

Swim Party

A Swim Party for families with special needs adults and children will take place from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday, July 18 at Taylor Pool (Rumsey Park). The event will feature a free swim and ice cream bars.

Back to School Drive

Payson Community Kids needs your help! PCK has started its annual Back-to-School Drive and needs your help filling up our donation boxes! Boxes are located at Walgreens, Bashas’, Walmart, Safeway and the Time Out Center Thrift Store. Supplies such as hand sanitizer, Kleenex, hygiene supplies, backpacks, notebooks, pencils, crayons and anything school related are much appreciated!

July Chamber Mixer

The July Chamber Mixer will be sponsored by Rim Country Health, and will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 18. The theme will be “Be Loyal, Buy Local,” and will feature products made or produced in Arizona.

The Beverage Place will provide samples of Arizona’s wines and beers, and our usual door prizes will be increased by Arizona Centennial memorabilia donated by Rim Country Health, 708 W. Longhorn Road, Payson.

Mixers are a great time to network, talk about your products, and get to know other Chamber members. Bring your cards and brochures, we’ll get you a name tag, and enjoy a social/business evening with food, music and other businesses.

County Supervisor candidates to speak

The Payson Tea Party will host Ronnie O. McDaniel, candidate for Gila County Supervisor, District 3, and Tommie Cline Martin, incumbent candidate for Gila County Supervisor, District 1, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, July 19 at Tiny’s Family Restaurant, 600 E. Highway 260, Payson.

MHA Arts & Crafts Sale

The Mogollon Health Alliance Auxiliary is having an Arts & Crafts Sale in the hospital’s main lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, July 20. Many items will be available including: baby blankets, bibs and toys; the ever-popular potato bags; denim purses; bird feeders; and more.

Democrats host wine and cheese reception

The Arizona Democratic Party invites you to a wine and cheese reception honoring the Gila County Democratic Party to be held from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Friday, July 20 at Gila County Democratic Party Headquarters, 1101 S. Beeline Highway.

Republican yard sale

The Rim Country Republicans yard sale, postponed due to rain, will now take place from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, July 21 at Republican Headquarters, 616 S. Beeline Highway, Payson.

Time Out benefit

This year, the summer benefit for Time Out Inc., Summer Sizzle Garden Party & Fashion Show, will be a visit to the lovely garden of Bob and Ruth Klaver at 11 a.m., Saturday, July 21.  

The event includes a fashion show, a great lunch and numerous treasures. Tickets are $20 per person and are available at the Time Out Thrift Shop.

‘Two Pianos, Four Hands’

You are cordially invited to “Two Pianos, Four Hands” — an hour-long concert featuring pianists Angeline Ng and Leeza Beriyeva performing Mozart’s “Sonata for Two Pianos in D Major” (1st movement only), Milhaud’s “Scaramouche,” Movements from Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” and Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue.”

Admission is free. There will be two performance times because seating and parking space is limited. Dress casual and bring your friends. Concert times are 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 19.

Free backpacks at McDonald’s July 28

Parents and students, get ready for the biggest backpack giveaway ever!

Payson McDonald’s restaurant, 107 E. Highway 260, will host Backpack Saturday at 8 a.m., July 28. The first 100 children who visit the restaurant will receive a free backpack. Payson Regional Medical Center, High Desert Dentistry and Payson Fire Department will also be on site providing information on health and safety.

This is part of an event in which McDonald’s restaurants throughout greater Phoenix and northern Arizona will give away a total of 20,000 backpacks and help thousands of children prepare for school.

‘History & Biscuits’

“History & Biscuits - Tales from the Rim” — a two-hour program of history from Rim Country — will be presented Saturday, July 28 at the Payson LDS Church - Stake Family History Center, 913 S. Ponderosa St. The program will start at 4 p.m. with six historians talking about six different Rim Country topics.

 Authors Jinx Pyle, Jane Peace Pyle, Tim Ehrhardt and Scott Wood will discuss topics such as The Pleasant Valley War, Women of the West, Zane Grey’s Country and Ancient Rim Country Residents. Margaret Parker will discuss the nature of early Pine, Ariz., and  Errol and Ella Lee Owens will describe the early days of the lumber industry in Rim Country.

After the sessions, attendees will be treated to fresh, hot Dutch oven biscuits.  There will also be an opportunity to see the Family History Center, with its expansive resources for finding family histories and relatives.

‘A Taste at the Bridge’

The Friends of the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park will present “A Taste at the Bridge” from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 4. This early evening setting will present the Tonto Natural Bridge at its finest, as well as western art by local artists, wine, light finger food, music, raffles and door prizes.

Come and tour the historic Tonto Lodge, see the rooms as they were, with in-room sinks, old photographs, iron beds and down-the-hall toilets. Even the Roof Room will be open for spectacular viewing of the Bridge and the canyon.

Only 200 tickets will be sold at $50 per ticket for an evening at Rim Country’s premier natural location. Tickets are available from the Friends board members, at the Chamber or online at
