The June highlight for the Payson Women’s Golf Association is the annual President’s Cup. This year, the two-day tournament took place on June 19 and June 26. It is a low net competition, so handicaps are used in determining the best score. This year, the competition was especially exciting because the tournament came down to an 18-hole playoff between the PWGA member with the lowest handicap and the member with the highest handicap.

Karen Peterson defeated Kay Davis by five strokes in the playoff to become the 2012 President’s Cup winner. Third place was a tie between Lois Judd and Alesha Calderwood, fourth went to Isabella Sockrider and there was a tie for fifth between Claudia Bullard and Jan Burns. Closest-to-the-pin winners on June 19 were Peterson and Judy Mackenzie and on the June 26, Susan Torrens and Shari Cody.

The play of the day on June 5 was “Front or Back,” where players get to pick in advance if they want their front score or back score to count. All of the ladies picked the back nine. Winning the A Flight was Donna Smid, with a three-way tie for second between Cody, Marcy Hewlett and Mackenzie. Judy McFall and Mary Cain tied for first in the B Flight. Winning the C Flight was Joyce Goff, with Marilyn Schaal taking second. Claudia Thompson won both closest-to-the-pin holes.

June 12 was a low gross format. Karen Peterson won the A Flight, Claudia Thompson came in second and Bullard was third. In the B Flight, McFall was first, followed by Mary Jones in second. There was a tie for first in the C Flight between Earlene Brewer and Schaal.

Even though the summer is half over, it’s never too late to join the PWGA. If you want to be part of the fun at the Payson Golf Course on Tuesday mornings, call Kelly O’Neill at (928) 478-0003.
