Have you ever gone to Young? We have been thinking of making the trip for quite a while, so we decided to make the trip this past weekend, which was a perfect time. The community was celebrating Pleasant Valley Days with many activities planned for the whole weekend. My hubby and I decided to go on Saturday, so we left at 5:30 a.m. to be there for breakfast at 7 a.m. The Community Center was serving biscuits and gravy. The early hour was well worth it; the biscuits were homemade and huge and tasted great. Along with the breakfast, there were vendors selling many unusual items in the building. There were activities going on all over town including a rodeo, a parade, wine tasting, a quilt contest and a shoot-out! We had a wonderful time visiting Young. They know how to put on a good celebration.
The rain has been a blessing this past week and what about that thunder and lightning show on Monday night? Our Puggle, Daisy Mae, was really hyper; she did not like the thunder one bit. Every time a big boom sounded, she barked and twirled in circles. I don’t know how much rain fell in the Village, but it was reported in Payson at about 3 inches.
Bear Flat residents have reported that since the monsoon started, they have received 2.97 inches of rain. The average is 4.28 inches for the past 12 years. They have calculated that for the year, they are 4 inches behind in precipitation. That is probably close for all of the surrounding regions except for the communities that are closer to the Rim.
Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary
Preparations are under way for participating in the next Food Festival sponsored by Bashas’ Market. More T-shirts have been ordered as has a new item… sun visors with the Hellsgate logo. Along with those items, the Fireflies will be selling raffle tickets for the Husqvarna chainsaw and the handmade quilt — the price is $1 per ticket or six for $5 — and the Fireflies cookbook for only $10. The booth will be set up from about 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m., if there is no wind. It was very difficult last time to hold everything down because of the strong winds.
A work day has been scheduled for 9 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 2 at the fire station to inventory the supplies needed for the Labor Day weekend barbecue on Sept. 1. All chair people need to be there to check their supplies needed for the barbecue. Refreshments will be served.
The next monthly meeting will be on Aug. 6 at the Tonto Village fire station beginning at 10 a.m. All meetings are open meetings and the public is invited to attend.
On July 27, Charlie Martin, a former resident of the Village and now a frequent visitor, will add another candle to her birthday cake. Have a great day, Charlie!
Also two anniversaries will be on the same day, Marilyn and Dick Lamb of Kohl’s Ranch will observe their 55th wedding anniversary. Chuck and Linda Stailey of Tonto Village II will have their 41st anniversary the same day. Happy anniversary to both couples.
Nate Mercer, a firefighter with Hellsgate, will celebrate his birthday on July 30. On a personal note, our oldest grandson, Jonathan Porter of Yuma will turn 32. Wow, where does the time go! Happy birthday to Nate and Jonathan, have a wonderful birthday.
