With the death of Mr. Doyle Coffey (see May 22 edition of Payson Roundup), Payson lost a real champion for Gila Community College in general and the Payson campus of GCC in particular.
I came to know Doyle after his quest for the land and buildings for the Payson campus were completed and successful.
To the end, he retained a proud and proprietary interest in both the college and the campus, always willing to give his advice on what he thought was best. Though in compromised health, Doyle would load his electric scooter onto his car and attend meetings of the Gila Community College Governing Board. But his memory was anything but compromised as he reminisced about his early struggles to obtain a campus for Payson.
He claimed to have worn out vehicles driving so much between Payson and Globe before AZ 188 was the route it is today!
Doyle was a true visionary and he had the tenacity to follow through on his vision for a college campus for Payson. Without the unselfish efforts of Doyle Coffey, GCC students might yet be attending classes in rented storefronts.
Thank you, Doyle. We will miss you.
