Earlene Brewer and Marilyn Schaal took first place in the Payson Women’s Golf Association’s 2012 Memorial Tournament.
The May highlight for the Payson Women’s Golf Association is the annual Memorial Tournament. The members pick a partner and play a best ball format. The 2012 Memorial was held May 29, with the team of Earlene Brewer and Marilyn Schaal taking first place. Taking second was Mary Jones and Jeannie Griffin, followed by the team of Mary Cain and Judy McFall in third. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Claudia Bullard and Jeannie Griffin.
The May 1 format was low gross/low net. In the low gross competition, Marcy Hewlett won the A Flight, Susan Torrens won the B Flight and Mary Jones won the C Flight. For low net, Claudia Bullard won the A Flight, Mary Cain won the B Flight and Earlene Brewer won the C Flight. Closest-to-the-pin honors went to Hewlett and Brewer.
On May 8, the game of the day was low putts. Judy Mackenzie took first, Susan Torrens took second, followed by a three-way tie for third between Karen Peterson, Donna Smid and Alesha Calderwood. Winning closest-to-the-pin was Marcy Hewlett and Earlene Brewer.
May 15 was a two best ball format. The team of Lois Judd, Mary Cain, Mary Jones and Marilyn Schaal took first, followed by the team of Donna Smid, Sharon Vaplon, Isabella Sockrider and Joyce Goff. Closest-to-the-pin winners were Jeannie Griffin and Kelly O’Neill.
On May 22, the group played “ONES.” Winning the A Flight was Donna Smid, followed by Shari Cody in second. The B Flight honors went to Jan Burns, with Joyce Goff taking second. Kay Davis won the C Flight and Marilyn Schaal was second. Kay Davis was also the closest-to-the-pin winner.
May was a month for birdies! The following ladies scored at least one birdie in May: Marcy Hewlett (8), Lois Judd, Judy Mackenzie (3), Karen Peterson (2), Mary Cain, Claudia Thompson (2), Kelly O’Neill, Claudia Bullard, Jeannie Griffin (2), Jan Burns, Shari Cody, Alesha Calderwood, Judy McFall and Isabella Sockrider. Chip-ins were recorded by Bullard, Mackenzie, Hewlett, Mary Jones, Griffin and Cain.
Special congratulations to PWGA member Karen Peterson, who participated in the NAWGA Seniors Tournament at the Oak Creek Country Club in Sedona on May 31. Peterson won the Super Seniors Flight.
