Bold Policy Setters?

Editor:

Thanks so much for your increased coverage of the Payson School Board. They are dealing with a number of issues critical to the success of our town, schools and students. While I am confident the current school board members are committed to their job, it’s no secret I am concerned about their recent decision to eliminate the only counselor position at the middle school.

I also do not share their sentiments on hastily creating and filling an athletic director position at the high school. While this position has been billed as an athletic/activities director, the credentials of the person who will fill the position seem to be focused on athletics. I hope emphasis will be put on other activities as well, in the coming year.

The board has most recently been faced with a question regarding nepotism in the schools. Their decision as reported in the Roundup is a non-decision. What I read is that they have passed the decision forward to the incoming superintendent and expressed they are open to exceptions.

As your recent editorial stated, we need this board to be bold policy setters. I don’t see that. But rather than just comment on the situation and attend school board meetings (to no avail), I might just need to run for one of the positions coming open in November.
