GPS 101

Do you have a GPS but are not sure how to use it? Learn the basic terminology, along with how to make way points, find specific points of interest, make your own tracks and navigate trails and off-road.

Bring your handheld GPS, computer connector cable, and owner’s manual.

This class will take place from 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 24 in the Parks and Rec conference room. Ages 13 and up welcome. The fee is $15.

Wilderness and Remote First Aid

Participants should have basic first aid training and/or certification.

Whether you’re a scout, an outdoor enthusiast or you work in a remote environment, the Wilderness and Remote First Aid course will provide the skills needed to respond to an emergency when help may be delayed.

Registration is open now. Class size is limited.

This class will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, April 14 and 15 (participants must attend both days).

Meet at the Parks and Rec conference room at Green Valley Lake.

The registration fee is $125 and certification received is valid for two years through the American Red Cross.

Flyfishing 101 and 102

Learn the history and tactics of Fly Fishing. This hands-on class will teach proper technique, show how to set up equipment and cast a rod. Both beginners and experienced fishermen are welcome.

The instructor will be Bob Youtz, president of The Payson Flycasters. All rods are provided, but participants are welcome to bring their own.

This class will be held from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. and noon to 1 p.m., Saturday, May 5 at the Parks and Rec Office, Green Valley Park. The cost is $10 per person.

It is open to those 13 and older.

Kids’ Fishing with Mark Kile

Children in the first through fifth grades can learn age-appropriate fishing techniques from Mark Kile, professional bass fisherman, at Green Valley Lake. All fishing equipment and bait is provided. Children should bring their own water for drinking.

Class will be held from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesday, May 16, which is a half-day of school. The fee is $5 per child. Meet at the Parks and Rec Office in Green Valley Park.

Optimist Fishing Festival

There will be free fishing for registered participants of all ages from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, March 31 at the lakes in Green Valley Park. The fun, day-long event is presented by the Rim Country Optimist Club and co-sponsored by the Arizona Game and Fish Department and the Payson Parks, Recreation & Tourism Department.

There is no fee and no license is required if properly registered the day of the event. In addition to fishing, there will be other activities and refreshments available for purchase.


Sponsored by Kiwanis, the free annual egg scramble for children ages 12 and under will begin at 9:30 a.m., Saturday, April 7 at Rumsey Park.

Children can collect eggs filled with candy and coupons for special prizes. Scramble times and age groups will be published later.
