Last Saturday, my neighbor and I attended the 14th annual Women’s Wellness Forum sponsored by the Mogollon Health Alliance. The keynote speaker this year was Jason Schechterle. What a fantastic speaker! He is truly a man who was handed a lemon, and he made lemonade. He was inspiring.
The breakout sessions were exceptional with information on women’s wellness. The day was definitely one of the best Wellness Forums that I have participated in; and out of the 14 held, I have probably been to at least 12.
We also attended the Business Showcase held at the Mazatzal Casino in the afternoon. There were many booths to see, but I remember when the event was held outside under a huge tent and I think that there was more room then, so it was less congested.
Hellsgate Fire Department
A wildland refresher course has been scheduled for Saturday, March 31. The class will be held at the Payson Fire Department’s Station #11 on Main Street. The class will start at 9 a.m. and it’s free.
Incident Safety Officer training, which is open to all firefighters, will be held April 25 and April 26. Fire Chief Pampa of the Glendale Fire Department will be the teacher. The cost of the class will be $50. Call Karen Carlen at the fire station in Star Valley to sign up and for more information. The phone number is (928) 474-3835. The deadline for signing up is April 18.
Awards for service will be presented at the next Hellsgate Fire Board to John Ceja, five years on April 1, and Captain Nick Fitch for many years of service to the fire department.
The first meeting of the Hellsgate Fireflies will be at 10 a.m., Monday, April 9 at the Tonto Village fire station. Everyone is invited and new members are encouraged to participate in the upcoming benefits on May 26 (Memorial Day Weekend) and Labor Day Weekend.
Good news! Hellsgate has a bit of money left to continue the brush pick-up for each community within the fire district. There is one stipulation, though — all brush needs to be in one central place in each community and the location of that site should be conveyed to the fire department. The president of each homeowner’s association has been notified, but not the communities that do not have a homeowner’s association. There needs to be a designated person for contact in Tonto Village and a few of the other communities. The pick-up will start around June 1, hopefully the dates will be determined by the fire season. If there is a change, the notification will be in this column.
Elections in November
There will be three vacancies on the Hellsgate Fire Board. Information on packets and other details are available from the Gila County Election Board in Globe. Phone numbers for director Linda Eastlick are (928) 402-8709 and (928) 402-8708.
Bill Fausz of Thompson Draw I starts off the month of April on April 2. Bill has been a great help to the Hellsgate Fireflies. He has lent a helping hand wherever needed — putting the signs out near the highway to putting up and taking down tables and chairs for the benefits. Thank you, Bill, for all that you have done for the fire department and especially for the Fireflies.
Melvin Palmer of Colcord Estates will celebrate his big day on April 4. I am sure that on his day he will be surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, as well as his wife, Wanda. They are a wonderful couple and here’s hoping Melvin has a wonderful birthday.
Zack Hornung is a firefighter for the Hellsgate Fire Department and he will also celebrate his birthday on April 4. I am sure that the other firefighters will make sure that he will remember his big day.
Another Hellsgate firefighter, John Jackson, will add another candle on April 14.
Eileen Kittock, an avid Domino Diva and a weekly player of ‘Hand and Foot’ card game, will add another year on April 7.
On April 8, Margot Holmes of Christopher Creek will celebrate her big day.
Happy birthday to each and every one.
A happy anniversary to Tonto Village III residents Kent and Gail Mortenson on their 36 years together.
The religious holidays are this coming week — Palm Sunday is April 1; Passover, April 6; and Easter Sunday is April 8. Easter is a time for sharing blessings, and the blessing of friendships and family. May your hearts be touched with love and joy and hope during the holidays.
