On Wednesday, March 28, the sounds of motorcycles reverberated throughout Payson. Hundreds of riders came up from Phoenix by way of Camp Verde on motorcycles that ranged from basic to extravagant.

The Buddy Stubbs Arizona Harley-Davidson Phoenix H.O.G. Chapter 93 group arranged the 230-mile ride to Macky’s Grill to enjoy lunch. All the proceeds benefited the Arizona Burn Foundation’s Camp Courage, a place for child burn victims to spend a week enjoying summer camp activities.

Leon Keddington said Macky’s has sponsored Chapter 93 and this ride for years. The restaurant swelled with visitors. Mayor Kenny Evans welcomed the riders, sporting an appropriately leather bomber’s jacket, but some kind of pin-striped pants that contrasted with the vivid outfits of the bikers.

Macky’s Grill has welcomed the event for years, offering bikers a luncheon special after their long, bug-splattering ride up from Cave Creek, across the Rim, back down to Payson for lunch before turning their decked-out, detailed motorcycles back downhill for the run home.

One rider described how Harley-Davidson owners feel about their machines: “I’d rather push my Harley through the gates of hell than ride a Honda through the gates of heaven
