Tonto Village Welcomes Three New Residents

It’s planting time! The threat of frost is still with us, but we will start with frost resistant veggies and cross our fingers that there will not be a bad cold snap. Maybe a great way to start your garden is to buy that special mother(s) in your life a starter plant such as a tomato plant or something you would like to grow and eat and present it to her on Mother’s Day, Sunday, May 13. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mothers out there, have a wonderful day.

Hellsgate Fire Department

Remember, the EMT Basic class starts Aug. 20. The class will be held at the Star Valley fire station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday evening. The cost of the class is $1,000. Please call Angie Lecher at (928) 474-3835 for the time and length of the class and to sign up.

The administrative office of Hellsgate at station #21 in Star Valley will be closed for the Memorial Day holiday.

New neighbors

I received an e-mail from Deborah Sampson, our local real estate agent this past week. Deborah is affiliated with Russ Lyon/Sotheby’s agency. Deborah and the residents of Tonto Village welcome two new residents to the neighborhood: Dennis and Angela Tomlinson and Emma Stetson.

The Tomlinsons purchased Jim and Phyllis Ballard’s lot at the corner of Fitch Lane and Thompson Road. They have already begun excavating and clearing the lot for their future home. Emma Stetson bought Rick and Sue Prach’s cabin on Standage. Emma is also renovating and improving her new home. Welcome to the Village. Please feel free to participate in all of the activities that are available, from competition pool for the gals and one for all competitors. There is Dominos on Wednesday afternoon and the auxiliary to the Hellsgate Fire Department has its annual Memorial Weekend breakfast at the fire station on May 26 and a carnival is being planned at Shelby School in a few weeks. If you have any questions regarding your home or you need general information, give Deborah a call. Her number is (928) 595-3096.

Safe camping and campfires

So far, there are no restrictions on campfires within Tonto National Forest or any of the national forests in our vicinity. If you have relatives or friends that will be camping in the area and will be in the Apache-Sitgreaves, Coconino or Tonto National Forests, they can call the local Payson Ranger Station for up-to-date information. The phone number is (928) 474-7900 or they can go online and earmark the national park they wish to camp at and they will get the latest updates.

The rules for safe campfires are simple: Have on hand, a shovel, dirt, water and a deep pit — surrounded by rocks, if possible. And NEVER leave a campfire burning, always put it out if everyone will be gone from the campsite.

Fun on Saturday

There will be a Wildlife Fair at Green Valley Park from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, May 12. My husband and I have visited this fair for many years and it is always a delightful way to spend a Saturday.

Shelby School events

There will be an “End of the Year Open House” from noon to 2 p.m., Friday, May 11. It is a time for interested parents and students to come and tour the school, meet the teachers, and receive pre-enrollment information for the 2012-13 school year. Current parents are also invited to come and see their children’s work. Classrooms will be open and the art department will be putting on a small art show.

Shelby School will also be holding a Barnyard Bash Carnival from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, May 18. This is the school’s annual end-of-the-year carnival. There will be booths with games and prizes, a bouncy house and lunch for the kids. Any families in the area with elementary-age children are welcome to join in all the fun and festivities. The school is located at 249 W. Standage Drive, 15 miles east of Payson off Highway 260. Contact Genoa at (928) 478-4706 for more information.

Yard sale

The Village will have many visitors to enjoy a great breakfast at the fire station on Saturday, May 26. Also at that time my husband Bill will be holding a yard sale all weekend at 424 W. Johnson Blvd. There will be a little bit of everything for sale. Is anyone else interested in holding a yard sale that weekend? It might be a good time for a lot of exposure that we would not ordinarily have to get rid of stuff.

Birthdays, etc.

Happy birthday to Hellsgate firefighter John Ceja. John’s birthday is May 14. John is the fellow who is at station #22 every day, and will issue burn permits and handle all emergencies. He will even be happy to give the Villagers blood pressure checks.

Former resident Sue Parch will be celebrating her big day on May 16. Annette Godfrey will add another candle to her birthday cake on May 17. Annette is an avid domino player and commutes from Payson every Wednesday. Chad Stluka, another firefighter for Hellsgate will have his big day on May 18. Happy birthday to all of you.

Double D Doings

There was only one pool competition played at the Double D this week. The nine-ball competition on Tuesday evening was the only game in town. The winners were Linda Stailey, shooting for first place; then Nanci Olson and Kara Shaw taking second and third place. Congratulations girls!
