As the fall golf season began winding down, Payson Men’s Golf Association members were seen scrambling to get as much tournament play in as possible before the winter recess arrived.
The golf blitzkrieg screeched to a halt Nov. 7, when members gathered at Payson Golf Course for the final event of the 2012 season — a two-man blind draw. Just one week earlier, the members met in an ABCD Best 3 out of 4-formatted tournament, which featured low net scoring.
In the season finale, Ron Fischer and Ralph Lindo paired up to post a 171 and win low gross honors.
Terry Lindsey and Ross Robertson carded a 174 and were second.
With a 176, Jack Proietto and Ed Kuhns took home the bronze medal.
In low net scoring, Gary Roveto and Bill Mullins were first at 135. Mike Anderson and Ed Quigley took second at 138 and the 139 posted by Alex Armenta and Don Gyde was good enough for third.
Popeye Clay (No. 17; 9 feet, 7-1/2 inches), Dick Harding (No. 5; 8 feet, 4 inches), Armenta (No. 2; 14 feet, 5 inches), Kuhns (No. 8; 4 feet, 3 inches) and Lindsey (No. 14; 9 feet, 1/2-inch) pocketed closest to the pin prize money.
In the ABCD tournament, the foursome of Herb Sherman, John Calderwood, Dave Rutter and Lindsey joined forces for a 177 to take home the gold medal.
With a 179, Oscar Garcia, Jim Dalgleish, Mullins and Proietto were second.
Frank Szakal, Gary Campbell, Jack Greenshield and Ed Kuhns took third at 186.
Larry Smith (No. 8; 3 feet, 1 inch), Garcia (No. 5; 6 feet, 9 inches), Lindsey (No. 2; 17 feet, 2 3/3 inches), Sherman (No. 17; 2 feet, 11-1/2 inches) and Campbell (No. 14; 6 feet, 11 inches) were closest to the pin winners.
