Over the last seven years, the Rim Country Regional Chamber of Commerce has waved banners, written articles and generally screamed, “Be Loyal, Buy Local” for all of our businesses in Rim Country. Our businesses depend upon the sales of their goods and services to Rim Country residents just to keep their doors open.
“Black Friday” and “Cyber Monday” feature large national chain stores and online purchases. Personally, the hype behind “Black Friday” has finally gone beyond my endurance. The “Cyber Monday” program eliminates sales taxes that all of our local merchants have to pay, creating an unfair price comparison.
Into the gap, left by these merchandising events, comes “Small Business Saturday.” This event at least reminds us to patronize our “brick and mortar” businesses that are small and local. “Small Business Saturday” is sandwiched between the day after Thanksgiving and the following “Cyber Monday.”
When all the spin and hype are over, we still have our original, “Be Loyal, Buy Local” program, which is a year-round story, and we’re sticking to it! So, this holiday season, please keep your money in Rim Country — I don’t think Maricopa, Pinal or any other county/state needs it.
