Rim Country Middle School cross country team members overcame the exhausting challenges of long-distance running, most of the time alone and with a crowd cheering them on, to take top honors at the Verde Valley League championships held Oct. 3 in Prescott.
The RCMS sixth-grade girls ran their way to a first-place finish and wrapped up the 2012 campaign undefeated. For the Lady Mavericks, Taylor Brade was third; Charlotte Sorenson, fourth; Arielle O’Connor, sixth; Perla Luna, 12th; and Amy Borges, 13th in the 56-runner field.
In the seventh/eighth-grade girls race, which drew about 60 entrants, eighth-grader Sarah Carter emerged as champion in a very quick ET.
“Her time would have actually paced her second in the boys race,” said coach Jackie Wallace.
In the sixth-grade boys race, Michael McEntire ran to seventh-place honors.
The championships marked the culmination of the 2012 season for the RCMS athletes.
