Payson Man Facing Murder Charges

Gasoa faces judge Nov. 19 in death of his daughter in rollover accident as he fled from police

A man facing second-degree murder for the death of his daughter in an August rollover car accident will appear in court next month.

Gasoa “Josh” Balas will stand before Judge Gary Scales with his attorney Michael Bernays at 9 a.m. Nov. 19 in Globe for a case management conference.

A grand jury indicted Balas in August on a slew of charges including DUI soon after a wreck where he was driving killed his 7-year-old daughter.

Balas was reportedly fleeing from Payson police officers after they tried to confront him for an alleged assault at a trailer park. After nearly hitting two officers, Balas sped through town with his daughter in the passenger seat.

Although officers withdrew from the chase due to Balas’ reckless speed, he reportedly continued south on Highway 87, eventually rolling his vehicle just north of Corvair Curve.

His daughter, Calandra Balas, was thrown from the vehicle and died on scene.

Balas has been in county jail on a number of charges since, including second-degree murder, child abuse, aggravated assault on a police officer, unlawful flight and DUI.

A jury trial for the case is scheduled for Jan. 29.
