Sam Boatman’s three first half touchdown runs, including an 85-yard TD scamper with the opening kickoff, lifted the Longhorns to a 37-0 halftime lead over the Miami Vandals on Friday evening in Miami.
In the third quarter, Payson scored again to take a 44-0 lead and end any doubts about which team would emerge victorious in the non-divisional showdown.
With the sizable lead, PHS coach Jake Swartwood shut down the Horn offense giving younger, junior varsity players the opportunity to gain valuable Friday night experience.
While the offense was in the spotlight most of the evening, the defense –anchored by Kyle Brown – was having its best showing of the young season. Miami failed to pick up a first down in the first half as Swartwood’s swarming bandits shut down the Vandals.
The win improves the Horns to 3-1 on the season with the undefeated Show Low Cougars waiting in the wings. The two long time rivals meet Sept. 21 in Payson.
