It’s doubtful any of the Payson Men’s Golf Association’s macho he-men would want to be publicly praised for wearing “cute matching outfits” but that is exactly what occurred following a two-man scramble on Sept. 19 when Oscar Garcia and Russ Morris were named best dressed of the tournament.
Rendering the honor even a bit more humbling was the fact the pair was not among the winners nor did the two pocket closest-to-the-pin prize money.
Oh well, there’s still time remaining in the 2012 season to recapture the duo’s somewhat frayed prestige.
In the PMGA fray, which was the Arizona Golf Association qualifier, Tim Ernst and Larry Smith emerged as champions and will represent the local club in the state tournament when it is played this fall at a Valley area course.
The duo will have a tough act to follow since last year’s PMGA qualifiers, Terry Lindsey and Richard Harding won the state title in the Arizona finale played Dec. 12 at Encanterra Golf Course in Queen Creek.
Ernst and Smith won the 2012 PMGA title by carding a gross 65.
Mike McKee and Jack Proietto took first in low net play with a 56.3
In senior, low net action, Jerry McGuire and Jim Livingston took home the gold at 54.8.
Virgil Clay (No. 2; 3 feet), Jim Dalgleish (No. 5; 29 feet, 10 inches), Bill Shedd (No. 8; 6 feet, 11 inches) Jesse Smith (No. 14; 2 feet, 8 inches) and Mike Anderson (No. 17; 13 feet, 11 inches) were closest-to-the-pin winners.
In a select drive ABCD tournament Sept. 12 at Payson Golf Course, a card of 170 propelled the foursome of Terry Lindsey, Frank Szakal, Ross Robertson and Benny Burns into first place.
With a 171, Ken Althoff, Russ Morris, Herb Sherman and Bill Shed were second.
Lindsey (No. 2; 14 feet, 3-1/2 inches), Dave Rutter (No. 5; 11 feet, 2-1/2 inches), Szakal (No. 8; 19 feet, 3 inches), Stan Eggen (No. 14; 9 feet, 11-1/2 inches) and Alex Armenta (No. 17; 4 feet, 7 inches) paid for beverages at the 19th hole post-tournament get-together in the PGA clubhouse.
