The Payson Longhorns softball and baseball teams have not only made the playoffs — the girls softball team earned the No. 2 ranking in the state.

The Longhorn baseball team landed the No. 9 seed, which means they will enter the playoffs with a first-round contest on April 30.

The Arizona Interscholastic Association announced the standings Thursday, with a first-ever baseball and softball state seeding show on its Web site at AIA365.com.

During the Web show, officials announced standings of the 24 teams that will play in the upcoming Division III state tournaments.

The baseball tournament leads off April 30 at the Surprise Sports Complex in Surprise and the softball tournament begins May 2 at Rose Mofford Complex in Phoenix.

The No. 2 ranked Lady Longhorns (23-4 overall) received a first-round bye and will open pursuit of the school’s first-ever state championship at 8 p.m., Friday, May 3 on Rose Mofford Field #4 against the winner of a first round game between Thatcher and Wickenburg on May 2.

The baseball team (17-9 overall) received a No. 9 seed and will play No. 14 Rio Rico at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30 on Surprise Field No. 6.
