Humane Society Needs Community’S Help

During these hot, wet days of the summer monsoon, the animals and staff of the Humane Society of Central Arizona (HSCAZ) thank Rim Country residents for their warm, dry, safe new home.

It has been one year since everyone moved to the new digs behind the old pre-1970 building that used to house the shelter. Dogs have a covered space and the cats enjoy glass-enclosed cat houses.

But donations are down and costs to operate this indoor facility continue to rise. Add to that the bountiful summer crop of puppies and kittens and the HSCAZ accommodations are at capacity.

Costs for dog food, cat food, kitty litter, cleaning and disinfecting supplies, medication and veterinary care pile up every day. Without staff on duty seven days a week, these animals would have no care, but staff needs support, too.

Everyone at HSCAZ works tirelessly on cost-saving measures to ensure the basic needs to care for the animals are met.

Donations of a few dollars or gift cards to Walmart, PETCO and PetSmart supplement the shelter’s operations and supply requirements.

Donations of in-kind items are equally appreciated such as food, collars and muzzles in all sizes, nylon leashes, toys for cats and dogs, stainless steel dishes, poop scoopers, plastic kiddy pools for the outdoor play yards, non-clumping kitty litter, large litter boxes, Rubbermaid storage bins, bleach and paper towels go a long way toward making the animals comfortable and cared for.

Consider bringing any used towels or blankets to the shelter — they are always in demand.

The Humane Society of Central Arizona is not part of or affiliated with the Arizona Humane Society (AHS), the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) or any other shelter organization. The HSCAZ serves the animals that come our way only through the generosity of local individuals, businesses, organizations and grants.
