Still time to register for fall classes at GCC
The 2013 fall term of Gila Community College started Aug. 19. It is not too late to register and, if you are over 55, there are no tuition fees.
Three of the most popular classes are beginning drawing, beginning acrylic painting and beginning watercolor. Students learn the basics with weekly lessons, demonstrations and a lot of practice.
The drawing class meets every Monday from 8 a.m. to 11:50 a.m. and the painting classes meet Tuesday morning, 8 a.m. to 11:50 a.m.
Don’t miss ‘Black Beard The Pirate, The Musical’
“Black Beard The Pirate, The Musical” will be presented at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 23 and at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24. The Missoula Children’s Theatre, with the help of Longhorn Theatre, Shelby School, Miller Auto Works, Plant Fair Nursery, the Brouwer family and other generous donors are producing this high seas adventure tale for local children to perform in a professional show.
Come on down to the Payson High School Auditorium and experience a swashbuckling good time with 60 local children in the cast. Admission is $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens and $6 for students, but you can purchase tickets in advance for $1 less at Oasis Christian Books, Miss Fitz 260 Café and the Habitat Re-Store.
Piano concert tonight
Concert pianist Andrew O’Brien will be heard in recital at 7 p.m., Friday, Aug. 23 at Payson’s Gila Community College Room 301, 201 N. Mudsprings Road.
O’Brien concertizes throughout the U.S. and Europe. He currently teaches at Scottsdale Community College and has a private studio in Phoenix.
O’Brien’s program will consist of Schubert’s “Sonata in A Minor, D. 784” and Chopin’s “Ballade in F Major, Op. 38.” The audience will have a rare opportunity to hear the “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky.
The recital is open to the public, free of charge. A reception will follow the program.
Girls’ softball tryouts
There will be tryouts to fill positions on a girls’ youth Amature Softball Association 10 & under and/or 12 & under fastpitch softball team. Tryouts are for girls 8-13 years old. Girls must have been 12 or under on Jan. 1, 2013.
Tryouts are Sunday, Aug. 25 from 9 a.m. to noon and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Monday, Aug. 26 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. All tryouts are on the Rumsey 3 field on North McLane Road.

Free brush pits
The Regional Payson Area Project….for a Fire Wise Rim Country (RPAP) will be staffing free brush drop-off points at the following locations, weather permitting:
On Saturday, Aug. 24, the Blattner Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Blattner Pit is located at Milepost 259.7 on Highway 260, east of Payson.
On Sunday, Aug. 25, the Pine Pit will be open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Pine Pit is located .7 of a mile east of Highway 87 on Control Road, south of Pine.
These locations are for brush, leaves, pine needles, trimmings and other vegetative materials only. No household garbage, construction debris, or other items will be accepted, and use by commercial haulers is prohibited.
Payson Farmers Market
Farm-fresh eggs and just-picked produce are waiting for you from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Payson Farmers Market, 816 S. Beeline Highway (behind Chili’s). Come early for the first pick of our farmers excellent produce.

Republican Club to host annual rummage sale
Rim Country Republican Club will host its annual rummage sale and Meet and Greet starting at 9 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 24 at Ramada 5 in Rumsey Park on North McLane Road.
Several elected officials will be in attendance and a drawing for three winners in the 2013 gun raffle is planned for 1 p.m.
There will be barbecue sandwiches available for $5 and baked goods will be offered for sale as well.

The Radiation Exposure Screening & Education Program (RESEP) is dedicated to helping individuals who were exposed to radiation from nuclear testing at the Nevada Test Site. Diabetic-friendly dishes are focus of next cooking class
Peggy Martin, CNN, will present a Cookin’ For Health class from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Payson Public Library, 328 N. McLane Road. The class will feature recipes from the editors of Prevention with the staff of the Joslin Diabetes Center — “Diabetes Breakthroughs 2010.”
Dishes will focus on fresh produce from the Farmers Market and will include a Diabetic-friendly Green Bean Casserole using freshly picked green beans, onions, garlic and peppers. The class will also explore roasted pepper creations and prepare a peppery eggplant appetizer.

Special needs carnival
A carnival for special needs families will be held from 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at the Payson Church of Christ, 401 E. Tyler Parkway (across from KMOG radio station).
‘In His Grip’ Youth Group will create a special time for special people featuring games, prizes, food and fun. A $5 donation at the door is requested.
Myra’s Art Gallery in Pine celebrates 20th anniversary
There will be a 20th anniversary celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 24 at Myra’s Art Gallery, located on Highway 87 in Pine. The event will feature music by Trouble in Paradise, great refreshments, book signings, a demonstration of throwing pottery by Alan and Carole Snyder and a silent auction of work by local artists.

The Reaching the Heart Ministries will present a Couples Night of Encouragement Saturday, Sept. 7 at Mountain Bible Church, Building C, 302 E. Rancho Road. Admission is $20 per couple and includes an Italian dinner.
