Monday evening it poured! I’m not sure how much rain fell in such a short time, but it came down so fast, my rain gutters couldn’t hold the water and overflowed. My doggie, Daisy knew that a storm was coming, she stayed close by me most of the afternoon and then when the thunder started, she hid herself in the bathroom.
I did receive rainfall totals from Bear Flat this week. Believe it or not, the totals are impressive. So far for the year, the precipitation has reached 21.80 inches. According to their records, the rainfall amount should be 17.81 inches, so, that’s almost 4 inches more than average.
I don’t believe that Tonto Village has received as much as Bear Flat. We need a person in the Village who can keep track of the rain and snow. Is there anyone out there who would be willing to keep those records?

The fire board is in need of another board member. The applicants must be a registered voter and live in the district. The letters must be handed in by Thursday, Sept. 5. The selection will be made at the September board meeting.
Just a reminder that the office will be closed for Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.
The seven Shelby students who were in the Missoula Children’s Theatre production of “Blackbeard the Pirate” enjoyed themselves thoroughly on the Longhorn Theatre’s stage this past week. They spent four days after school going to rehearsal, had a “dress” run-through Friday afternoon, and were entertaining happy audiences both Friday and Saturday evenings. In the words of their MCT tour director, “If they can do that in four days, just imagine what they can do with the rest of their lives!”
Shelby students participating in the production were Lydia Anderson, Caylinn McCarthy, Tara Ramirez, Emma Helmick, Occean Helmick, Vogue Tanenhaus and Gabriella Driver.
Sunday, Sept. 1 is Karen Fausz’s big day. Karen is secretary for the Hellsgate Fireflies Auxiliary and she is a cook-off winner with her award-winning recipe. She has graciously allowed the recipe to be in the group’s cookbook, “Fireflies Can Cook.” Look for it at the end of the column.
Marge Tolby of Tonto Village III will celebrate her birthday on Sept. 12.
Happy birthday to Karen and Marge.
Get well wishes to Betty Conover of Star Valley. Betty had to spend some time in the hospital, but she is now home. May the sun shine on your speedy recovery.
The award-winning recipe
(NASCAR Grand Prize Winner)
2 cans whole kernel corn, drained into a 2 cup measure — save liquid
2 eggs beaten slightly
24 original Ritz crackers
1-3/4 cups shredded mild or medium cheddar cheese
Additional cup cheese
Put corn and eggs in mixing bowl and stir to mix, then break in pieces (not crush) the crackers, adding to corn and egg mixture with about a quarter to half cup of reserved liquid. If you can’t see any liquid, add more. Then add cheese, put in greased (use butter) 2-quart baking dish and bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes then add 1 cup more cheese on top and bake another 10 to 15 minutes or until set. Makes eight servings.
The cookbooks are still on sale and can be bought for $10 from any auxiliary member or call Janet at (928) 478-9935 or Dara at (928) 478-0052.
