Spirit of Christmas concert is Sunday

The 8th Annual Spirit of Christmas is Sunday, Dec. 8 at the Payson High School Auditorium.

Presented by the Payson Christian Ministerial Fellowship, the always popular and awe-inspiring event will take place at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Admission is a non-perishable food item.

In the past, the pageant has featured music from church choirs and soloists, dance, sketches and music.

This year, the program has received assistance from Rim Country Health, which has provided major funding.

Enter house lighting contest for chance at money

The 9th Annual “Light the Rim” House Lighting Contest will award a total of $500 in prize money to winners this year. But, as the lottery folks say, “You can’t win if you don’t play.” So, get those entry forms in as soon as possible. The deadline to enter is Saturday, Dec. 7.

First prize is $250; second prize is $150; and third prize is $100.

Entry forms are available at the Roundup office, 708 N. Beeline Highway; at Rim Country Guns & Archery, 513 S. Beeline; the Chamber office at the corner of Beeline and West Main Street and at www.rimcountrychamber.com.

Judging will be on the evenings of Dec. 10 and 11. Winners will be announced on Dec. 13 and a map of all entrants will be available in the Roundup and the Chamber.

Unity of Payson presents Christmas concert

Join members of Unity of Payson as it hosts Mark Stanton Welch in a Christmas concert from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6. Welch will present his favorites as well as seasonal songs and sing-alongs.  

Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 at the door, and $5 for youth, 18 years and under. Please feel free to call or email Unity of Payson, at unityofpayson@gmail.com (928) 478-8515 for ticket purchases. Tickets are available at the Time Out Thrift Store in Payson, which is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The concert will be at 600 E. Highway 260, Suite 14, next to Tiny’s. Refreshments will be served.

Train display opens

The Community Presbyterian Church hosts the Mudhens Railroad Display this weekend. It opens from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 in the lounge and continues from noon to 9 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7.

Friday night, the show accompanies a chili supper from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with music provided by Cinnamon Twist performing train songs

Admission to the dinner is $5, but for every canned food item you bring in, you get $1 off the admission price up to $5. The cans collected are for the Payson Area Food Drive. Admission to the Mudhens Railroad Display is also one canned good. The church is located at 800 W. Main St.

School play

The Junior Drama Club presents “The Hysterical History of the Trojan War” by D. M. Larson.

This comedic short play will be performed at 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6 in the high school audtitorium. Tickets will be at the door for $3 for adults and $2 for students. Bring a few extra dollars for the amazing Longhorn Theatre Concession Stand.

Young Community Holiday Bazaar

Trek over to Young for the 14th annual Community Holiday Bazaar at Braswell’s Chuckwagon from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6 and 7, and from noon to 4 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8. There will be lots of food, books and plenty of other gift items.

MHA Arts, Crafts & Bake Sale

The Mogollon Health Alliance Auxiliary is having an Arts, Crafts and Bake Sale in the hospital’s main lobby from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6.

Items available to purchase: baby blankets, bibs, toys, scarves, catnip toys, dishcloths, jewelry and more.

Proceeds from the sale will go to support the many programs and scholarships offered by the Mogollon Health Alliance. For more information, call (928) 472-2588.

Student Art Show

Swing by the Payson campus of Gila Community College, 201 N. Mud Springs Road, for the 7th annual Student Art Show and Sale from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 6. The show will include oils, acrylics, ceramics, sculpture, photography, folk art, drawings and cake decorating. The event is free and refreshments will be served.

Holly Berry Fair

The Rim Country’s oldest civic organization, the Payson Womans Club, will have its annual Holly Berry Fair from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. and again from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7 (the evening hours are for the benefit of those attending Payson’s Electric Light Christmas Parade on Main Street).

The Holly Berry Fair features crafts and baked goods, plus a Southwestern Lunch with green chile burros, posole, beans and a dessert of pie or cake.

The Payson Womans Club is just east of the Payson Senior Center, which is at 514 W. Main St.

Christmas Boutique in Pine

The Pine Strawberry Arts & Crafts Guild Christmas Boutique is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the weekends of Dec. 7 and Dec. 14. The Christmas Boutique is in the Arts & Crafts Guild Room at the Pine Community Center.

Handbags, accessories sale

The Mogollon Health Alliance will host Paula’s Bags & More of Scottsdale for a sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Dec. 9 at the Payson Regional Medical Center main lobby.

The sale will feature a great selection of purses, men’s and ladies’ wallets, fanny packs, travel bags, pet carriers, cell phone covers, Bible covers and various other items.

Carol’s Cookie Sale

The Ladies (ECW) of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church present Carol’s Cookie Sale from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7 at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Easy St., Payson. 

Cookies will be sold by the Baker’s Dozen, so that you can select the variety you wish. Come early for a select number of decorative tins for the cookies, ready to give as a gift, or to include in your holiday décor.

Bring the children and let them decorate sugar cookies at the kids’ table while you shop. 

Proceeds from the sale will be used to support ministries and missions that serve children, youth and women in the Rim Country.

The ladies of the church are honoring the memory of Carol Hiscox with the sale.

Santa pictures at Mount Cross

Cameras will be flashing at the log building of Mount Cross Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7. For a donation, you can take pictures with Santa including not only family members, but pets as well. The church is at 601 E. Highway 260, Payson.

Santa Paws

Pine Country Animal Clinic, 401 W. Main St., will have its third Annual Santa Paws event where you bring your pets for photos with Santa from 10 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Dec. 7.

The photo fees will be contributed to the National Canine Cancer Foundation and its fight against the disease, which affects one out of three dogs in the U.S.

Write for Rights

Payson Amnesty International invites Rim residents to participate in the Global Write-a-thon, Saturday, Dec. 7.  

Join Payson Amnesty International and human rights activists around the world in working to free prisoners of conscience and help others who are at risk.

Participants write letters to demand that the rights of individuals are respected, protected and fulfilled. In doing so, they show solidarity with those suffering human rights abuses and demand that oppressors free those unjustly abused and jailed. More than 40,000 innocent individuals have been freed as a result of our letter writing efforts.

Join members of Payson Amnesty International and others from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Payson Public Library — it only takes 10 minutes to write a letter and save a life.

Key Club offers gift wrapping

Members of the high school Kiwanis Key Club will be at Walmart in the garden section this Saturday, Dec. 7 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. wrapping gifts for a donation.

Electric Light Parade

Payson’s Electric Light Parade is at 6 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7 beginning at Green Valley Park and making its way east on Historic Main Street to the Sawmill Crossing. This year’s theme is “A Charlie Brown Christmas,” and Santa will be there, too.

Bring non-perishable food items to donate when you see the award-winning Fiesta Bowl Parade Pine Trees. All donations will help local families in need.

Get a good spot

Keep warm with some delicious baked treats and hot cocoa or coffee from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 7 at the Community Presbyterian Child Learning Center, 800 W. Main St. All donations will go toward the Community Presbyterian Child Learning Center children’s Christmas community service programs. Come early, get a good spot to watch the parade and park for free.

Praise & Worship Service

Rock of Ages Lutheran Church will offer a contemporary Praise & Worship Service at 11:15 a.m., Sunday, Dec. 8 in its Fellowship Hall. Refreshments will be served following the service. The church is at 204 W. Airport Road, Payson.

Senior Circle Christmas Potluck

The Senior Circle plans a Christmas Potluck for its Wednesday, Dec. 11 member lunch. The Senior Circle will provide the meat (a ham). Participants are asked to bring a favorite dish to share.
