A new psychiatrist is expanding his practice into Payson.

Dr. Mohammad Karami recently opened an office at 700 W. Main St., in the same building as psychologist Penny Navis-Schmidt, although they have separate practices.

Karami noticed a lack of psychiatry services in the area while traveling through in route to work. Karami already has an office in Mesa and plans to split his time between locations.

Karami has more than 20 years experience and has won several awards, including Outstanding Physician from Carey Counseling, Outstanding Physician from Quinco Mental Health Center and Top Psychiatrist from the Consumers Council of America.

He offers psychiatric evaluations and medication management, specializing in adult psychiatry, emergent psychiatry, geriatric, dementia/Alzheimer’s, depression, anxiety, bipolar and PTSD.

His practice, Arizona Advanced Health Services, accepts most insurance plans.

Karami plans to be in Payson starting every other Monday and add more days when needed.

He completed his residency at the Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tenn. and attended the Santiago University of Technology (UTESA), a private university in the Dominican Republic, for medical school.
