After starting the season 7-0, Payson’s wrestling team went up against a strong Flagstaff Coconino team in a quadrangular match at Page on Wednesday.

The Panthers, who finished third in last season’s Division III state tournament, won nine of the 14 weights in a 45-25 victory. Payson beat Page 51-24 and Flagstaff 44-33 in its other matches to improve to 9-1.

“We didn’t wrestle very well,” said PHS coach Zach Lee of the Coconino match. “They’re usually pretty tough. It would have taken us wrestling like we’re capable of to beat them, but we just didn’t put together that kind of performance to beat them.

“Where we have tough kids, they have tough kids and they won the tough matches.”

One of those matches came at 132 pounds, where Payson’s Dallin Macnab faced two-time state champion Gabriel Galaviz.

Galaviz, a senior, is the defending Div. III champ at 120 pounds. Macnab was fifth at that weight as a junior. Galaviz also won the 103 title as a freshman before placing fourth at 113 as a sophomore. Macnab was fifth at that weight as a junior.

Galaviz edged Macnab 8-7 in a bout the Longhorn and his coach thought he was winning 8-7.

“Both he and I thought he was winning 8-7,” Lee said. “We talked about it afterward. We both looked at the score the wrong way.”

Of course, that changed the way Macnab approached things late in the battle.

“We definitely would have changed what we were doing up a little bit there at the end of the match,” Lee said. “It was just confusion with the score. I didn’t realize what the score was. We got a takedown with about 45 seconds left (to make it 7-8) and we could have let him go (for a one-point escape, making it 7-9) and tied it up (with a two-point takedown) and at least go into overtime. It was a tight match. Dallin wrestled a tough match. It just wasn’t good enough.”

Macnab won his other two matches to improve to 11-1. He edged Aran Mowbray of Page 9-8 and won by technical fall against Flagstaff.

Dylan Keeney was 3-0 at 120, pinning both opponents he faced and also winning by forfeit. “Dylan wrestled really well,” Lee said. “He was doing the right things. He listens well.”

Byron McCrary was 3-0 at 106 with two pins and a decision. “He’s definitely looking good,” Lee said. “It’s nice to have somebody win matches down there.”

Tito Vega was 3-0 at 195. Two of his victories were by forfeit but he did record one of his team’s five triumphs against Coconino with a pin.

Tate Sweeney went 2-1 at 145, winning by major decision against Coconino and by fall against Page. The only blemish on his day was a 2-1 loss to Flagstaff’s Michael Salazar.

Trevor Anderson (126) and Isaiah Skinner (160) were both 2-1 with a couple of pins. Chase Elmer (138) was 2-1 with a pin.
