Christmas diaper drive

During the month of December, Preferred Women’s Care will be collecting all sizes of diapers and pull-ups for families in need. All diapers collected will be distributed between New Beginnings Pregnancy Center and the Time Out Shelter in Payson. Please drop off donations at the Preferred Women’s Care office during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Thursday, 120 E. Main St., Suite A, Payson. Socks and gloves collection

Polish Plus, 107 W. Wade, Suite 1, Payson is collecting socks and gloves for all ages.

All socks and gloves are given to the Time Out Shelter and the local veterans.

Movies for kids

Isabelle Hunt Memorial Public Library in Pine plans to show “The Smurfs 2” for Holiday Movie Madness at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 26. Youngsters should bring a pillow to be comfortable on the library floor and refreshments will be served. To learn more, call (928) 476-3678.

The Payson Public Library will offer a special Monday Midday Movie from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Dec. 30 with “Happy Feet 2.”

Snuggle with a Book

To close out 2013 and welcome 2014, the Payson Public Library will have a Children’s Winter Reading Program, Snuggle with a Book, from Monday, Dec. 30 through Tuesday, Jan. 14.

Participants who read a total of six books during the period of the program will receive prizes and a certificate.

Pine Strawberry Food Bank

Cold weather is here, along with the holidays, and the need in the community is continuing to grow. Please consider donating to the Pine Strawberry Food Bank. A collection box is at Ponderosa Market as well as a freezer for turkeys and hams; another drop box is at the post office.

Learn to preserve photos and more

Have you inherited a box of documents, photos, and memorabilia, but don’t know where to start to assure their safety? Perhaps you’re already well organized and have a question about how to care for a particular item. Family treasures need to last for future generations. Find out how to preserve these treasures by attending the next genealogy meeting at 1:30 p.m., Thursday, Jan. 2 at the Northern Gila County Genealogy Library, 302 E. Bonita St., Payson.

Christine Solymossy, Payson Public Library’s archivist, will present the program, Preserving Family Photos, Documents, & Film.

The library is open to the public, so come and bring a friend and your questions.

Almost New Thrift Shop $1 Bag Sale

Select from hundreds of clothing items, shoes, belts and more. Anything else you wear (except for jewelry) that can fit into one of the shop’s bags, can be purchased for just $1 (for the entire bag). This sale will take place the first Monday of every month. The next sale will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 6.

There is lots of inventory to choose from so come help us to support the health scholarship fund and the many other programs put on by the Mogollon Health Alliance Auxiliary.

Digital photography class

Learning the ins and outs of using a digital camera can be made easier by taking the beginning digital photography class at Gila Community College this spring semester. Students must have a digital camera of some type. DSLR cameras are preferred for the class but not mandatory.

The class is taught by award-winning photographer Tom Brossart, who has more than 30 years experience as a professional photographer.

Class time is from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays beginning in January. Call GCC at (928) 468-8039 for further information on the class.

Schedule of Christmas Eve and Christmas Services

Calvary Chapel Payson

Calvary Chapel Payson, 1103 N. Beeline Highway, Payson, will have its Christmas Eve Service at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24. There will be no service Christmas Day.

Its New Year’s Eve Service is at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 31. No service is planned for New Year’s Day, Jan. 1.

Community Presbyterian Church

The Community Presbyterian Church, 800 W. Main St., Payson, will have a traditional candlelight service at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24. It will feature carols and scripture, and closing with candle lighting.

Expedition Church

Expedition Church Christmas Eve Celebration is at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24 in the Julia Randall Elementary gym, 902 W. Main St., Payson. Come enjoy singing Christmas carols, tasty treats, an inspiring message titled, “Light Has Come” and a few more festive surprises. For more information, go to

First Church of the Nazarene

A Candlelight Christmas Eve Service is planned for 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24 with Christmas carols, communion, and a candlelight ceremony. Everyone is invited. The First Church of the Nazarene is at 200 E. Tyler Parkway, Payson.

Holy Nativity Catholic Church

The Church of the Holy Nativity, Payson’s newest Roman Catholic parish under the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter, will have the historical and traditional Christmas Eve Mass at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24 and Christmas Day Mass at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 25. The church is located at 1414 N. Easy St. (corner of North Easy Street and Bradley Dr.), Payson.

Mountain Bible Church

Mountain Bible Church, 302 E. Rancho Rd., Payson, will have two Christmas Eve services — one at 4:30 p.m. and the other at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24. The services last one hour and are planned with the entire family in mind. The services will include carols and special music, a children’s story and a brief message from the pastor. Outside events include carolers, cookies and hot chocolate and a small petting zoo.

Mount Cross Lutheran Church

The congregation of Mount Cross Lutheran Church (ELCA), 601 E. Highway 260, Payson, warmly invites all citizens of the Payson area to attend their Candle Light Christmas Eve Services Tuesday, Dec. 24. The first service is geared with the family in mind will be held at 6:30 p.m. The later liturgical service will be held at 8:15 p.m. and features a Handbell Choir, ringing with joyous Good News, as well as a Chancel Choir lifting voices in praise. Both services will offer communion.

Payson United Methodist Church

The Payson United Methodist Church, 414 N. Easy St., Payson, will have its Christmas Eve Service at 5:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24 and will include special music and the Candlelight Ceremony.

Shepherd of the Pines Lutheran Church, 507 W. Wade Lane, Payson, will celebrate Christmas with two special services. A Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will be held at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24. The theme will be “Jesus is the Root of Jesse.” The Christmas Day Service is at 10 a.m., Wednesday, Dec. 25. Holy Communion will be served. The theme will be “Jesus is the Key of David.”

Shiloh Christian Fellowship

Shiloh Christian Fellowship, 501 E. Rancho Road (across from Payson Elementary School), will be holding a Christmas Eve Service at 6:30 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24.

There will be Christmas carols, hear the Christmas story from the Bible, a brief message from the pastor and the history of the candy cane. There will be a fellowship with refreshments after the service.

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church

St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, 1000 N. Easy St., Payson, will have a Christmas Eve Family Service at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24 with Holy Eucharist, lessons and carols.

Christmas Eve Midnight Eucharist is at 11 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 24.
