Christopher Gould takes the oath as a second lieutenant in the cadet division of the Civil Air Patrol in Payson on Tuesday.
He also received the Billy Mitchell Award.
He joins fellow patrol members who do search and rescue and assist law enforcement, often in the air.
Membership in the patrol also provides a boost for cadets who go into the military.
Payson Squadron 209 has several dozen active members. Cadets must be high school students and undergo aviation training.
